How have you been injured whilst fixing your bike?

I once undertook a calliper rebuild on my avids, whilst holding the calliper in one hand and pumping air into it with the other, the piston finally shot out hitting me clean in the forehead, about half a centimetre above my eye, any lower and I would have created a new meaning for piston head.

Inumerable chainringed knuckles when removing cranks. I can see it coming every time but never seem able to avoid it.
Maybe I subconciously like it.

I once dislocated a finger wrapping an elastic band around an inner tube. Finger taped up for a week, no riding for a month ๐Ÿ™

Took a slice off my thumb, when my cassette chainwrench suddenly stopped wrenching.

I stuck a Stanley knife nice and deep into that bit between forefinger and thumb while cutting zip ties to remove a chainstay protector. Went to A&E and had to lie down on the seats. I'm rubbish with blood.

Got my index finger on my right hand caught between the big ring and the front mech whilst cleaning the chain. Claret.

Holding my track bike up with one hand spinning the cranks with the other and caught my finger in the chain. The momentum of the fixed wheel dragged my finger (now between the chain and ring) half way round and then locked up. No quick release wheels on a track bike so had to shout my wife to find a spanner to undo the wheel and release the tension.

That was a long wait and my wife is still rubbish with spanners ๐Ÿ™„

Oh yeah it bled a little and I still have the scar where it went through my finger

You're lucky scotty, a mechanic friend of mine did that (finger caught between chain and chainring on a fixie) and it took the top joint of his finger clean off.

When i was a kid a fellow kid trapped his fingers between the chain ring at the front and the chain, the wheel slid out backwards so the adults couldnt pull the wheel forward to relaease his fingers, he screamed a lot, till an adult gripped his arm while another tirned the cranks backwards, he had holes in his fingers pouring blood on the way to hospital.

He never did ride a bike again.

Got a nice little scar on my top lip from fitting a stubborn crown race with a hefty slide hammer. Sat on a step, forks between the knees, good hard strike followed by another, followed by another, then the slide hammer came up a bit too far, came off the steerer, which flicked back into my face.Painful, but entertaining for everyone watching.

Got a workstand for xmas, lost the nail off my index finger in a rotor within two days.

Learned my lesson.

Actually, no, lost the nail off my middle finger two days later, then learned my lesson.

Chainringed knuckles. Got a random cut down my arm from bike-fixing related issues, no idea how I did it though. Was trying to undo a bolt by hitting an allen key with a hammer, snapped the allen key, which pinged off and bruised my finger. not tried to get that bolt out, but I don't envy 18 Bikes Matt when he tries, may well need destroying. Oops ๐Ÿ™

I mashed my finger tip in a rotor and had to have surgery.
If you look through this you will see the gory details of 'Fingers K' that wwaswas refers to.

My finger has still not healed fully (nearly 5 months on)!

tried to stretch a tyre onto a rim by putting my right foot in the tyre and yanking up the rim to stretch it onto the rim (desperate measures). The wheel flew up and the brake disc, on the right side, scraped up my leg and I have a 2 inch scar there... very noticeable! Lots of blood, no pain.

Odd injury.

The tyre never did go on.

I'm forever maiming myself when working on cars or motorbikes but never on pushirons. Except for that one time I was trying to seal up a tubeless tyre, and punched myself so hard in the jaw that I couldn't walk straight for ages. But that hardly counts.

A cut under my eye from a lefty damper that shot across the room... Close call! Note to self - always remove the valve core before working on suspension... ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Got a rubbish scar on the fleshy part of my left hand where a Leatherman slipped and the point of the blade only really stopped when it hit the bone.

Rubbish scar is thanks to the surgeon that put the whole mess together and fixed it so that i could use my thumb fully. (except for important things like holding pints)

Servicing my wife hayes brakes, gave the lever a test, the bleed cap blew off firing, brake fluid into my eye. Not pleaseant and needed a good emergency eyewash.

Inumerable chainringed knuckles when removing cranks. I can see it coming every time but never seem able to avoid it.

Put the chain on the big ring when doing this, it still hurts when you slip, but there is less impaling and less blood. HTH
