I send j-peg attachments to clients and they reply back saying it's embedded in the email and they can't download it.

This seems to be happening more and more, apart from Zipping everything, is there a solution?

It's driving me mad...

Cheers!

When you click attach a screen drops down so you can select a file. At the bottom of this screen is an option to send windows friendly attachments. This has always worked for me.

Doh! Wrong forum, sorry. This doesn't seem to help Muffin Man, I've googled and it seems to be a fairly common problem, but no solutions!

How can it be "embedded in the email and they can't download it".

If they can see it, they can download it (in fact they already have), surely?

I think it depends on whatever mail system your clients are using rather than any issue with Mail itself.
Assuming your clients are on PCs, they can always right click to get a download/save option.
I get the same problem BTW.

I always tell them to right-click/save-as... Some say this only gives them a 72dpi screen version.

Glen, apparently they come through looking like an HTML email and when they view attachments, there's nothing there. I've no idea what's happening to the attachments...

Are you sending your email as plain text?

It's formatted, so Rich Text... Does that make a difference>

It might do. I always send email as plain text, there's no way an attachment can become embedded then (unless the email client on the other end is bonkers).

I've never had this problem in years of mail.app use - I always send emails in plain text. This is probably the answer.

Some further testing reveals that if you attach the image & then right click & select 'View as icon' that it does indeed attach the photo rather than embedding it. When viewed in Gmail or Outlook 2007 the attachments are seen as attachments. If you do not select 'View as icon' then the photos are embedded in the body text of the email. I still think that this is the wrong behaviour but at least we have a workaround now.

This Woody? Cool, I'll try it now, probably won't hear back til Monday though. Thanks very much for the link!

No cigar I'm afraid Woody, same result.. ๐Ÿ™

I've just tried sending it as plain text rather than Rich, let's see what that does...

not used mail in years but if i remember right, it's to do with how you send it, if you drag the jpeg into the message body it will embed itself, but if you go file>attach(or whereever that is, canny mind) or drag it to the bar at the top specifically for attachments it should be available for normal download...anyhow don't quote me, but its what i remember, it works that way on thunderbird and i think entourage aswell..
