The carbon whippet with proper forks is 999 - that might be better.

got one i like it, it's a gash bike which gets left at work, used for night rides and then hosed down and stuck back in the office garage, good bit of kit and the alfine is a good bit of kit - minimal attention bike. not sure about the prices now mine was a secondhand ss to me and i added the alfine

dont know about the on one.....................but as a previous ney sayer, i am prepared to say that the alfine is awesome.

just got back from a weeks long tour on my leccy bike, but on hill terrain.
the ability to change from eigth to first gear while not pedaling is fantastic.

I've got a rigid hub geared bike and they are great - I use mine all winter to commute off road to work and pretty much any time it's wet and muddy for the rest of the year. The chain gets a wipe with a rag and a squirt of GT85.

ran one one on a dn6 inbred for a while, with air revs. felt MUCH better on a P7 with coil pikes. better balanced. ymmv.

Just waiting a shifter for mine then I can put an 8 speed alfine on my roadrat.

They do seem to have good reviews.

Do it. I love my Alfine 8spd. It just works.

Get a singlespeed instead. Lighter, cheaper, more reliable.

I have a 8 speed Alfine on a charge mixer for commuting. Would not really trust shifting under pressure as it tends to complain with grinding sounds. Hence I would not want one for MTB duties. A deore chain, mech, block and crankset can be self-repaired, checked and treated very badly and will still work. Don't really trust all those little cogs! Not saying I don't think it works really well, just it's not fit and forget.

Personally I would go for a singlespeed or as above, build up a cheap geared bike. Alfine hubs seem to get good reviews but also seem very expensive for what they are.

've been using my Alfine8 on my mountain bike for nearly a year now, thru a winter of sticky horrible mud and rain. Absolutely no problems. Costs less than a mech/chain/cassette.

The shifting & performance in the crap is unquestionable. The faff and time spent changing a flat was the reason I sold mine. Awkward.

Eh! Understanding how two 15mm nuts undo and familiarising yourself with how easy the gear cable unhooks ain't much slower than a QR!?

For the record, I'm about to go 8 speed Alfine and belt drive for the winter!

Twohats - do it at speed in the middle of the night in an enduro.
I commented as it is not for me. It may suit others. Such is life. For me they are a faff.

Shifting under pressure isn't an issue for me as I don't do it on a normal geared bike so never do so on the alfine. Punctures are a piece of p*ss to fix, have a few trys in the garage first. 15mm spanner is the real problem as it weighs so much that is slows me down massively 🙄 Just stick it in the camelbak / seat bag with the tube etc

That 15mm spanner could be the difference between a podium place or not ! 😉

Does alfine 8sp give you all the gears you really need, or is 11sp alfine a better option? If this makes sense.

I talked myself out of it by realising the whippet @999 and the inbred alfine11 @ 1199 were probably better value.

One of these On-One deals will snare me soon though.

Think of it as roughly running on the middle front ring , and only using the rear cassette for gears. Its that sort of gear range.

I have one on my commuter, and tend to only use the upper range of the gears, however on a steep steep hill, the lowest one is normally enough to get me up.
