As per the title really. In France for a few weeks and the BB on the road bike has decided to sound suspiciously like it's about to disintegrate. As far as I know the LBS is pretty much non English speaking and although my French isn't completely useless, I'm not too hot on technical bike terms.
Sheldon Brown reckons "jeu de pédalier" but I'm not certain that's an up to date term. Any French speakers out there got any better advice?
"CAN I HAVE A PRESS FIT BOTTOM BRACKET FOR MY BICYCLE PLEASE"
should do it.
Avez-vous un ajustement serré FSA sur l'adaptateur fileté s'il vous plaît?
Le pressfit
"Un morceau de merde" is the correct technical term.
I've had good luck finding the part on chainreactioncycles in english, then switching the site to French
but pointing pretty much always works as well
Freewheeling France also goes with Jeu de pedalier
Boitier de Pédalier - PressFit
Lols at wwaswas
Point at it, say 'putain de Sram!' and they will sort it out.
Fin de cloche
I suspected that pointing might be the best solution and that Merde might be the correct term.
Thanks for the advice, the Chainreaction trick comes up with Jeu de Pédalier Press Fit but Boitier looks better, cheers devash
I'll try a combination of pointing, shouting and your suggestions 🙂
J'ai besoin de quelque chose pour pousser dans mes fesses
Well maybe not all your suggestions ^^
Just walk into shop and point to the new bike you want - easier than the ball ache a pf bottom bracket presents to the user (purely done to save costs for the manufacturer as less tolerance required by them)...get rid of bike. May sound harsh but you will thank me for that advice.
I know all the horror stories but I must have been fairly lucky as I've had more than 7000km out of this one.
Show-off!
Un nouveau boîtier (uh noo-voh bwutty-ay) is indeed what you want.
Good moaning, may boocycle is brocken please fix may bootom brocket.
Totally understand your quandary. Pressfit BB’s are known as ‘couche’.
So for a Hope pressfit BB you would ask for:
“Voulez-vous couche avec moi, c’est soir Hope”
Simultaneously, give them with an air of confidence a ‘wink’. In French a ‘wink’ is viewed as a polite, but very sincere thank you - and is hugely appreciated.

Why has no-one suggested the obvious? Order online and fit it yerself?! No pesky foreigners to deal with then.
Ordering online is sounding like the best option.
LBS doesn’t have the tools or parts for a BB90 (but at least they did understand what I wanted, so thanks for that) and the trek dealer they sent me to is on holiday until March 🤷♂️
or, I’ll just do the sensible thing and use the mtb instead.
I think the BB90 bearings are just an interference fit into the cups so you may be able to just push the old ones out and new ones in by hand. If the bearing is loose in the cup (some Trek frames were prone to this) you will need the oversized version of the bearing.
Whereabouts in France are you?
wwaswas got it wrong...the volume is correct but it needs to be......SAID......MORE......SLOWLY...!

But it online and get the mobile workshop guy near you to fit it?
First answer was right, increasing in volume and gesticulation every time you need to repeat it until you get what you want.
So why don't you go to Carpentras ou Avignon or even Cavaillon? It's so close there are a t least 10 bike shops within 25K from there(where I live in france the only one is my shed 😉 ). Just google Marchand de Velo and one of these city and town names and go visit them.
Best to ignore most of the french above 😉 juste point and say write cassé(broken) remplacer(replace) combien(how much) and delay/quand(delay/when) should get you back rolling
Best to ignore most of the french above 😉
Especially mine!
