Sorry for long winded rambling. It's Thursday, OK?

I've got 2 MTBs and a Roadrat.

And 6 spare wheels.
And I have no idea what to do with them.

I don't want or need another bike. Can't afford one anyway.
So first up there's the standard wheels off the Pitch: Deore rear, 20mm front, DT Swiss rims. VGC
I got a bargain deal on some wheels off a mate, then decided the rear rim was a bit dodgy to use in the Alps, so used the front on the Pitch (Hope Pro 2, SUN SOS rim) and built another rear SUN SOS onto a 36h Hope XC that I got half price. Nice hoops. Burly.
So that leaves the bargain rear which just happens to have a DT Swiss Onyx hub worth £110 on CRC!! Dunno what to do with that. Maybe keep the hub as a spare for the Inbred which has an old Hope XC rear on a very battered 717 rim....?
Then there's the £5 wheel I got from the recycling centre (OK, tip) that has a crap rim and missing spokes, but a Deore hub, newish cassette and disc on it. So that's for spares right? Cassette's worth £20.....
That's 4 wheels so far, if you're counting. Keep up.
Then I was given a pair of On-One wheels by a very generous STWer as he knows I like building wheels, and thought I could use the rims. Turns out they just needed new bearings, which I had in the tool box, and are otherwise in nice nick. Planet X/O-O cartrige bearing hubs, silver spokes, black disc/vee Reetard rims.

WhatthehelldoIdowithallthesewheels???

I could sell the Pitch OE wheels, but I might keep them as they are lighter than the ones on it now, and use them for lighter duties. And I **might** build a hardcore hardtail sometime. BeFe?
I could sell the wheels I was given, but I'd feel guilty about that. I could keep them as spares. Always hady, right? I could strip them down and rebuild the hubs onto 700c wheels and bang them on the Roadrat with the spare disc brakes I have.
Depending on what I do above I could sell the Onyx wheel or keep the hub as a spare for the battered Inbred.
Or I could do a switch involving MrsPPs Deore/717 wheels, the O-O wheels, my Inbred wheels and the Onyx hub. But that's waaaaay to complicated to explain here.....!

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Confuzzed. Bugger.

you could "sell" the on-one wheels for free to keep your kama going.
You could build the 700 disk wheel and sell them from free too, jus tto get even better karma (to me indeed).

But hey ho then tell us how many wheels a year you broke and I'll tell you how many you need to keep 😉

(Mr MC posting) give the "fixed" On One wheels to the STWer who gave you them, or if they dont want them either pass them on for free as Juan says, or sell them on Ebay and split the return with the original donor?

I know the feeling, currently managing a fleet of 6 bikes (MC owns most of them!) and trying to figure out what to do with them. My old semi-retired bike has Hope hubs with fat, heavy EX325 rims on, but I have some unused 717 rims hanging up, so I could build them onto the Hopes and put them on MC's light hardtail, or leave the 325s on and put them on her burly full susser. I already built her a DH wheel out of a spare monster Sun MTX rim and a cheap but functional shimano hub for our alps trip as her original wheel (DT Swiss Cerit) needed new bearings which I didnt have time to source. She now has the original wheel back etc etc ad nauseum

What a spoketacular amout of wheels. You should sit down with a cup (and cone) of tea and decide which ones to sell off. I would have thought a hardcore hardtail would be hard to build from spares unless you have a nice longtravel fork lieing around too.

Yeah. That's the thing. I've got most of a bike spare, apart from frame and forks. And that's the 'spensive bit. Especially a BeFe frame.... 😐

PeterPoddy - sorry to dredge up an old thread. I am trying to replace (or at least regrease) the bearings in my On-One rear hub. I have managed to get both the spacers and the freehub off but can't get the cartridge bearings out. I gather I am meant to tap the axle out from the freehub side which will push out one of the cartridges but I have hit the axle harder than I really feel comfortable without any sign of budging the bearings. Is it really just a case of knocking the axle out? I am damaging my mallet I am hitting the axle so hard!

Now, without having a wheel in front of me (I've sold them to buy a flashgun!) I think I know what's happening here

You say 'mallet' and that you're damaging it, so I imagine it's a wooden mallet, yes? Basically, use a proper metal hammer!
Make sure you've supported the opposite side of the hub, over something that leaves space for the bearings to come out, then use your hammer from the other side on the axle. You might have to hit is faily hard, but it should move before you damage the axle. A wooden mallet will absorb too much force
🙂
