I may be riding from the top of this. Good news is it's probably 30k downhill to the sea. Bad news is getting up there in the first place. Oh well we'll se.

So is it Crete? I went to Crete years ago on a 'civilian' holiday ๐Ÿ˜‰ and I imagined it would be awesome for a bit of biking

Yep is what is Crete. The pic is from the top of Pachnes which is the second highest peak. Although Sfakians (the region it's in) keep putting stones on it as they want the highest. Was stories that the Greek army survey team had confirmed it was. But not sure. Sfakians don't like being beaten by other people from Crete as they believe they are the true people of Crete as the Turks never managed to quell and populate the area, therefore there was no inter breeding. Hence lighter hair, skin and eyes of many of the inhabitants.

I think it's over 2,400 meters high. Might hire a local shepherd and his flat back to do most of the 22 k of dirt road up to the mountains. Might be cheating but it's going to take 6 hours or more round trip just to get to that end of the island.
