I worked out using a gear calculator that my 'easy' gear 1 x 34 in 9 speed with a 32 front ring would be the same as 1 x 36 in 10 speed with a 34 front ring, so if I'd kept the 32 on the front it would have been an easier gear.

Yes, unless you're already running the Deore 12-36 boat anchor cassette.
