Ive never had a 2*9 set up and I'm thinking of doing a new hard tail with this configuration.
Is it dim of me to think I just need a 2*9 crankset and jobs a good un?
I've got XT Deore triple ring set up at the mo - any reason I can't whip off the big ring and bolt a bash ring in its place?
It'd certainly save me some pennies doing this but wasn't sure if chain line was an issue then with getting the ickle cogs at the back.
Comments, help and general ridicule welcomed.
Yeah just take the big ring off the triple
as the middle ring is in the possition to utilise the whole cassette range it will be fine may be worth just dropping a link or to out the chain as it will be setup to use the big ring with said slack
i use the same setup on a hardtail removed outer ring bolted a bash removed link jobs a goodun just remember to tap in the stop screw abit on front mech
I've just done exactly the same thing. Race Face triple with the outer ring removed and a Hope bash in its place, then the limit screw on the front mech adjusted.
Taking it out for its first proper spin around Swinley today in fact ๐
Like said, makes sure you adjust the limit screw so you don't accidentally shift into the bash ring.
Shorten the chain too.
Cool. Saved me some money there (to spend on other shiny bits.....)
You may need new (shorter/longer) chain ring bolts depending on your bash ring.
2x9? you are at least 2 gears behind the times.
Assuming you run a typical 3x9 general type set up & are aiming for something similar;
22t and 36t front give a nice wide spread of ratios if using a 11-34 cassette. Some think a 24t & 36t gives a smoother front shift and are happy to loose the 22:34 ratio in favour of the 24:34.
Creamegg - just had the Doh! moment realising I need longer bolts.
Crotchrocket - it's an experiment at the mo. if I like it I'll try some better ratios : rings.

not necessarily. raceface bash i fitted went straight on.
You shouldn't need longer bolts. After using a bash ring for some time I realised it was pointless as I never bashed it anyway. Made it harder to clean too. Just needed some narrow bolts.
