Got a pair in black purchased back in the day from the Malverns for the dual slalom. Just had a look and you can still see the scars!

Up until earlier this year I had a black pair on my commuter into the bearings finally failed catastrophically.

Also had a red pair in the mid '90's for racing with. I quite liked them.

I took a picture almost exactly like that a few weeks ago when I spotted the same pedals and box, displayed in the same fashion, in the window of a second hand tat shop.

I settled for a picture as I can remember actually using them and I'm happier with modern technology.

I had the red ones on my Rockhopper, they were ace and you could spot a fellow user by the bite taken out of their shin!

The bearings in mine were ace, they would spin for ages (usually just after I had fallen off)

I used to work in a bike shop as the Saturday lad and I used to drool over them . They were locked in a glass case of 'special things' that customers had to request to look at/handle. Then a mate got them and I can still remember the searing pain to this day after the first endo to back hop slip

A mate of mine had a set of Odyssey Black Widows on his ProFlex, I recall they were equally merciless to shins!

Sadly I remember using the bench grinder where I worked on a Saturday to make the Tioga pedals I used a bit more grippy. I also used a bread knife to cut the Cheng Shin tyres in my '94 GT Talera to make them grip a bit more. In my defence I blame MTB Pro and MBUK.

The thing is they look like they should be grippy- all those jaggedy teeth, but they were just a bit crap and hurt lots when it went wrong. The silly Phillips screws came loose too.

Between those and the slippy Tioga Psychos/Ritchey WCS tyres I would have been using its surprising I'm not still stuck in some bushes after an OTB incident

Oh yeah I'd forgotten those black widows . They look cool actually.

What were the ones that actually looked like a meat tenderiser hammer?

Until recently those were the last flat pedals I owned and the reason I bought spd pedals

Primo Tenderizers shurely?

[img] [/img]

Back in my mid 90s BMX days I always wanted a pair of JP pedals. RRP was insane.

Difference is, the black widows were actually very grippy. Think I've got a set in the garage with some even spikier cages made from stainless steel.... Properly scary just to look at, let alone catch on my shins!

I had the Primo Tenderizers on a BMX. When you search them on Google images you get this;

surely any flat pedal if you slip them causes loads of damage? hence why the trialz boyz wear shin pads

Have you seen how tame modern pedals are by comparison? All flat with dinky little pins. Most BMX'ers are now on plastic pedals. The old ones look like something from a Saw film.

I've taken a DMR Vault to the shin a few times and it hurts but it's nothing like looking down and seeing the blood running out of your pants and finding a chunk of flesh on a pedal that was actually called a 'bear trap'.

Look how many retro pedals have the names of wild animals in them!

Was there also one called Bear Trap? That's my recollection.

Also had some Shinburgers on my Racelink for the full Brooklyn effect but as per above they were rubbish and soon got replaced with MX30's.

Hutch Beartraps FTW especially when gold plated!

Bear traps.

OMG they still sell them - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/wellgo-bear-trap-platform-953-flat-pedals/rp-prod5207?gs=1&gclid=CNaFhvSHm8gCFRNmGwodp38LPQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

My brother has a lifelong tribute to them right across his shin (like a big smile)

Yes.

I remember using some snips to cut bits out of my tyres to make them grippier.

I used to love my Primo Tenderisers on my BMX. Then I got some Syncros Mentals (hated them). I do remember saving up for ages to buy some BMW Shin Burgers only to find they were terrible.

I don't know if it was the advent of 5Tens or buying decent pedals that finally stopped my legs looking like mice had been nibbling them.

The GF still complains about using my old Shin Burgers when she was learning to ride every time we have a wedding to go to and she has to wear a short dress ๐Ÿ˜‰

Everyone with a bmx had Tenderizers. They were the best pedals available and came in all the colours. They reigned until light bikes and slimmed down parts took off and everyone bought Odyssey Cielinski's.
