Anyone got anything to report on the Hoy Bonaly 20"/24" kids bike either good/bad/could do better for the cash?.

My mates kid (just turned 7 but tall, sort of my godson but without the bothersome god bit) has outgrown his Islabikes Beinn 16" and is in need for a new bike so i was going to treat him, i was looking around on the web and these seem well specced and lightweight - i'd like to have a look at one in the flesh but that would involve a 200 mile journey so i thought i'd check the stw font of knowledge instead.

cheers,

Got two of the 20" ones, excellent little bikes. I do work for the company but would have got them anyway. Three or four others at the boys cycling club and all very highly thought of. Very light and nicely specced. Resisting the urge to stealth upgrade them without the wife realising. Only thing I've done so far is drill the rims to take schraeder as 20" presta tubes aren't as easy to get.

I bought my 6 yr old a Hoy meadowbank (ex demo bargain). It's very well made, super light and as it uses proper "big bike" bits it'll be easy to keep up to. It's very much a "road" bike (unlike the bonaly), I just managed to squeeze 1.4" tyres in for a bit of extra comfort. Boy likes it though and that's the biggest thing. Definitely worth considering, I think they're easily up there with Isla/Frog bikes.

light but spec is pretty crap, 8sp single 32t ring only going to 34 at the back and the bar is pretty narrow.

Spec is just like any other kids bike tbh, islabikes are hardly dripping with top drawer kit considering the hefty price tag

By stw standards a pretty favourable response, as for spec that's another stw argument waiting to explode but as he's only 7 I doubt he'll be upset at 32x34 rather than a thick/thin front ring and 40tooth rear - the weight of such a bike is more of a pressing issue. His islabike I bought him a couple of years ago is not exactly up to my xtr boutique standards yet he loves it and treats it with a bike geeks respect, to the extent that he dislikes getting it wet/dirty.

Cheers peeps 🙂

Got my boy a 24" as didn't want an Isla hybrid and the mtb's are pricey. Very impressed and it's very light. Better price than Isla too. Evans have got some ex-demo going cheap now too (£245).

but its ment to be a proper, we designed kids bike. a single ring 32 with only a 34 8sp at the back isn't that well designed for an 8 year old

And the equivalent isla has 7spd, 32t with 12/32 cassette and narrow bars. They're well designed, aren't they? What's your point caller?

its not, I wouldn't buy an isla bike for my boy and didn't.

My son has one. It's good, fits him well and is simple with 1x and rigid forks. Only downside was having to go to Evans to buy it.
