No idea what tool i need.

Pin spanner? Screw driver? A key even?

Any help appreciated.

Is that just a plastic cover for a sq. taper?

Yup.

Use anything within reason to unscrew the cap (flat blade screwdriver, end of a cone spanner, small coin, etc etc), a 14mm socket to remove the crank bolt, then a crank extractor tool to remove the crank from the square tapered axle.

Grand thank you. Was very worried as I'd agreed to have a look at the creaky bottom bracket in return for curry, one thing to admit defeat, quite another to turn down a takeaway.

For long term fix. Replace what ever tat is in there with a Shimano un55 bottom bracket

Once the cranks are off just measure the shell width and the axle length
