Just removed a silver thomson post from a steel frame. It never got adjusted and had been in for a couple of years. The lower part of the post is covered in hard brown rusty marks from the frame. Is this likely to be chemically bonded to the post, or is there a way to remove it without taking any aluminium off in the process? The post is in otherwise perfect condition so I don't want to damage it if possible. It will work fine with the brown rust staining, but if I want to sell it, it looks a mess.
Cheers
You need something to dissolve the rust (iron oxide) but leave the anodised coating.
I have no idea what that might be...
i take it you have tried soaking in wd then cleaning?
I haven't tried WD40 yet, thanks
Brasso and elbow grease.
Diesel
or some of that rust convertor stuff might be soft enough. Ano is pretty hard to remove (chemically) anyway so I wouldn't worry too much.
Rub with cola and tin foil. Seriously. Hold up, I'll find a link

Brilliant, lots of things to try. Thanks!
Rust dissolves in vinegar - just soak for a bit, rinse off and oil.
Following on from this anyone know a good way to clean the inside of the seat tube on a steel bike? The seat post came out with a lot of effort and a large pipe wrench, the inside of the frame isn't too bad, but there is some rust, only down as far as the post was in, below that its nice and shiny. So far I've used elbow grease and a long brass wire brush, which does a fair job.
Also, anyone used copper grease or similar to stop the post seizing in?
