Want to get some new white (matching) gear and brake cables, (Jagwire seem to cater for both uses) but before I buy them I would like to know how to fit them and wether it is advisable to do the work myself...(??)
what do you need to know chris? As long as you have a philips screw driver to remove the plugs from the shifters, some sharp cable cutters, and a 5ml allen key you are away. Do you have a fair amount of common sense? if so no issues ๐

Question I've been afraid to ask... If I too were to replace my gear cables, would I need to adjust my mechs again? (stop laughing at the back)

Usually yes, at least the rear mech anyway in my experience. Not that the rear mech is miles out, just usually needs a bit of tweaking to get it running smoothly again.
Trick to fitting new cables is to make sure you cut the outer to the right length first. After that it's just a case of tweaking the adjusters on the shifters.
Start with the adjusters set roughly in the middle of their range and set the cable tight. run the chain up and down the cassette on cog at a time, adjusting as you go til all runs up and down smoothly.
It can be an art at first but like anything else practice makes perfect ๐

As muddydwarf said, you shouldn't need to adjust the mech screws after replacing the cables, but leave the barrel adjusters on the shifters roughly in the middle and start from there.
If you're using full length outers, it's going to be an easier job...
That said, even after seven years of replacing cables I can never get my front mech to shift cleanly first time!
Thanks, I'm getting a new bike soon and I'm going to respray my others so they all match, as I'm a bit sad/tart (delete as appropriate) like that. I've been fiddiling round with an old steel Scott learning more about mechanics. Before I attempt to single speed it I will take off and put back the gear cables before attempting fresh cables in my other bike. Thanks for your advice, op please let me know how you got on.
