Minor crash yesterday, down a gentle slope with one hand on the bars. Hit the deck hard but landed on that soft loam you get under beech trees made from hundreds of years of beech masts being laid down. No rocks or roots in sight. When I rode off my drivetrain was clicking and randomly shifting. I assumed I'd either bent the mech or the hanger, but it all checked out. Then I noticed this:
What the heck?
There had been a few clicks and ticks since I got the bike a couple of weeks ago, I assumed it was just being fussy as it's my first 12sp bike, but there's a chance this was always there and was somehow made worse during the crash.
Did it get caught on something or is this the process of the link snapping? I don't think the latter. It's on the inside of the chain.

I've had that before and not from a crash(that I was aware of). Mine was bent inwards slightly and caused the link to stiffen so it made a noise every time it went round the mech. I've still no idea how it happened.
That's amazing that it's bent and not broken.
I was at the golfie last weekend and one of our group ripped off the font valve on a log. Something that would normally result in at best out a few broken spokes and at worse a crash either would be ride ending. Inner-tube saved the day!

A friend managed to do this without snapping the chain.

How do you twist a chain falling off? I took one hand off the bars, the front wheel must've hit something and I went down. And the chain hasn't twisted - none of the other links are bent - something's got underneath that and prised it open. Possibly a cassette tooth in just the wrong place as something put load through the chain - pedal hitting the floor, or me, or something.
I've snapped a new 10sp KMC chain 3 times in the last fortnight with almost the same damage, where the end of the link has been snapped off. This seemed to happen in my lowest climbing gear - i.e where there was a large force going through the sprocket and chain. The problem was probably a conbination of a incompatibel titanium campagnolo casssette and a ligthweight KMC chain, buy hey ho.
Check the teeth on your cassette to make sure none are bent from before (causing) or after (resulting from) the crash

Or the chain simply doubled over on itself in the crash, wheels and cranks have plenty of leverage over the drivetrain, that's the whole point of them, of course if you're Appling a few KN perpendicular to the normal axis it doesn't take that much to buck a dinky little plate...
I cannot believe that tj hasn’t suggested putoline as a solution to the problem.
Looks like it might have caught on a chainring/cassette tooth while flapping about.

Bash a powerlink in there and you'll be fine. Discovered 3 powerlink on my chain...don't remember putting them there....

Aha, tj must have known - that explains it.
I bought two powerlinks - fifteen ****ing quid??? - and a new chain just in case that one is damaged in more than one place.

You can buy links from other UK based suppliers, which are not the same brand as the chain, work the same and aren't as much of a rip off for teeny tiny bits of metal!

Plus I want to ride it tomorrow since I think I lost the rear light off my helmet in the crash and I want to go back before anyone else nabs it.
There are 252 powerlinks in a 126 link chain, and they're assembled, but it's only 3x the price of two. And you get 126 rollers too.

I know but when it's full RRP which in the MTB market is a fanciful mockery for show to potential investors, look we sell this bit of generic Chinese/Taiwan made tat to idiots for this much!

The chain needed two power links. £15 to repair a chain, I think I'm still just about ahead. I still have the one that came with the new chain I bought to use as an emergency spare. It probably won't get used until this chain wears out, so I can then fit it and use these three as emergency repair options.
I had a similar thing happen to a chain a few years ago. I was riding over some gravel and the drivetrain suddenly jammed. On closer inspection, one of the outer plates of the chain had been bent outward. The only thing that I could conclude was that a small flint with a sharp edge had got flicked up and jammed between the chain and rear mech.
I noticed that the bent part perfectly co-incided with a tooth, so that's clearly what caused it to bend. Maybe the mech got hit and jammed the chain onto a tooth at the same time as the pedal dug into the ground and put loads of force into it. That's my best guess.
I did this recently.....not heard of Oval jockey wheels before. Sadly I think the cheap crap alloy is more responsible than my awesome leg power
