I've not played with a dynamo hub before and I have just received this in the post:
null
And it feels a bit 'notchy' is this because of the dynamo or has the previous owner been a bit heavy handed with the cone spanners?

They are notchy in hand but not felt in a wheel riding, it's the magnets working their magic

They’re all like that.

They are all notchy - I've a SON Deluxe and an SP dynamo which feel exactly the same in the hand but are fine when riding. It's the magnets on the rotor resisting against the magnets in the shell at each pole.

No free energy lunch. You won’t notice when you’ve built it up.

Good to know, cheers all.
I may well open it up just to inspect bearings/cones an splodge in fresh grease.

Check carefully before opening up, iirc it's easy to damage the wiring on some of them

Err, be careful! I'd check that it is user serviceable before opening it up.

Yeah, don't do that.

From the Shimano service instructions...

do not disassemble the internal hub mechanism

do not apply any grease to the inside of the hub

the hub dynamo will cause the turning of the wheel to be slightly heavier because of the magnet inside the hub

It may not be that easy. Left hand side is relatively normal but the wires exit on the right and so you risk damaging them if you mess with that side. Sometimes you can create enough gap in the right to squirt some grease in by loosening the left.
