Four.

An MTB for off road.
A road bike for on road.
And two bikes (an EBC Courier and a Singlecross) I use for everything - commuting, on road, off road, going to the shops, touring.

Rigid SS MTB for 'no fuss' all winter riding.
HT SS MTB for slightly more comfortable all year riding.
HT geared MTB for Enduros.
HT geared MTB for XC racing.
Fixed road bike for winter training.
Fixed track bike for, erm.. track.
Geared road bike for winter training.
Geared road bike permanently attached to turbo.
Geared road bike for summer and TT.

Obviously I'm missing a lightweight FS MTB and a dedicated TT bike. And probably a 'proper' lightweight bike for road racing.

EDIT: And a CX bike. I reckon I need one of those too.

4

1. Boardman HT (own build)

2. Giant TranceX (much bodged)

These two bikes have a enough overlap to ride one when the other is broken, though the TranceX feels distinctly beefier now. But generally the HT is for winter use as the FS is a beetch to clean. Although I currently find myself sneaking off with the HT quite a lot because it's fun. It feels like how I imagine having an affair feels.

3. Commuter (old steel MTB converted for road-use)

4. Folder (cheap, nasty and surprisingly useful)

I've been totally brutal recently.

I've got it down to three mountain bikes, two road bikes, one cross bike and one track bike.

Quite pleased with myself really.

This site has a lot to answer for. I used to have three - a hardtail, a bmx and the ratbike - and that was more than enough.

Now the the ratbike's on its way to becoming a wheel truing stand, the hardtail's the SS hardtail, the bmx is now the old bmx and I've got the new bmx, the shiteweather SS commuter, the fixed gear commuter, the antique, the lending hack, the good hardtail, the winter road bike and most recently the dream road bike.

Mrs tyred has two and the Tyreds Jr (combined age 7) have three between them. Maximum capacity is approaching, we'll have to move soon.

Maybe 7 is the magic number.....
I don't know about the rest of you but me and jedi are riding GODS and we've both got seven bikes. Looks like the millenia age riddle has been solved. The answer to 'what's the perfect number of bikes' is no longer 'n+1 where 'n' is the number of bikes you already own', the answer is far more simple than that.

7

2; 700c commuter and XC full susser.

Would like to add a BMX/DJ type muck around on bike and a road bike.

Can't be arsed shuttling the DH stuff around here and I get bored of it TBH anyway, so no need for DH. Would be different if I lived need lift served maybe.

Don't need/want an XC hardtail either; ride for fun, not race, so pref the comfort of the full sus. Could go for 5" instead of the current 4", but again don't need the extra cos of the terrain around here.

Roadie for "just riding" would be good; commuter has a small sus fork up front for the half asleep commute in and out of work and flat bars, but is a bit sluggish for longer rides when the point is the actual ride, not just transport.

Can't see the point of more than you can actually use and is why at present I would like another two, but don't actually have them. Would rather spend the money on other stuff, like travelling to new riding locations.
