Big fan of How It's Made and was just cruising through a few youtube vids when I cam across these two.
An interesting diversion anyway.

How It's Made is essential "5am on a night shift" TV viewing. Most subjects are accompanied with murmuring of "oh, that's how they do that".
๐
TV on a night shift, they've even blocked access to any video content on our PC's, and I suspect it's only a matter of time before they block STW. ๐
OK... So the little smacks they were employing to get the frame perfectly straight...
How many of us could claim to have a straight and true frame after watching that?

I believe the term is 'Slight adjustment with a precision instrument'
Nowt wrong with a bit of percussive alignment ๐
There's a lovely old film of the Raleigh factory, showing the production line - tubes carefully mitered, fitted into jigs, brazed on automated gas hearths, then the last stage is an alignment table and a massive bloke with a scaffold tube bending the frame straight ๐
Loved that, really interesting stuff ๐
Here's the 1945 Raleigh equivalent. Proper industrial machinery, class and gender inequality, health and safety (not) and gas pipe being welded but unfortunately I couldn't find the precision adjustments. Skilled workers are required to fit wheels apparently.

Love How it's made. Sometimes there just isn't quite enough detail for me though.
So interesting.
There's one for MRP Stage suspension forks too
Inner tubes!
Bike wheels (non-disc)...
...and tyres:
bravo bongo.
Where's the English narrator gone?
It's not the same without his Mancunian tones.
They also did one with Campag/ KMC chains.

Different markets had different presenters. I think mainly to allow for different metric/imperial measurements to be used in the narration. Most clips on YouTube are the US version, just as they were more readily available I guess. Especially as there has been 26 seasons there, compared to 16 or 17 here.
What I do remember about the UK shows, was any signage/text shown on screen was in French.....
....so I used to think the show was French. Turns out it's actually made in Quebec, with a lot of the early episodes being filmed there. The UK shows just had Tony Hirst doing a dub, and then the Americans would do the same.
FWIW: http://www.questtv.co.uk/how-its-made-on-quest/ has all the latest UK episodes on their on demand player.

I might try that on my nephew ๐
(joke, they are both bigger than me now!)
I enjoyed that. Good to have a bit of insight into what goes on in making the stuff we buy.
