Have to make a flying visit back to the UK in Feb, Barcelona- Bristol fri back tue. Got a decent flight deal with Easyjet and tried to hire a car with them as well. It clearly states that they need a credit card to take a swipe of for excess charges, fines etc, even if the flights were booked with a debit card. I don't have a credit card and really don't want one especially as applying will be a headache, living in Spain.
Any bright ideas on what to do?

Phone them? It used to be that you could give most hire companies a huge cash deposit but I am not sure if this is so now. Or would they accept a debit card? My local enterprise accepts debit cards

It categorically states that a debit card is not acceptable, even if it was used to pay for the flights and hire car. Not sure ringing will help, they are very clear on the website. I did a reverse trip with hire car a few years ago and had no issue, if it was a longer trip we'd come on the ferry and use our own car but it's not worth it for 5 days.

I used a debit card (albeit in the US) and they withdrew/froze some huge balance which nearly put me out of funds. So if they do take a debit card found out what they do with it first!

I watched a German guy get very angry when the hire company wouldn't hand over the keys earlier this year in Mallorca. Eventually he called the broker he booked it through and they agreed to be responsible for the excess.

Use a broker, it'll be much cheaper anyway.

You may have to buy their accident damage waiver or give them a large deposit.
