i have the correct tool but cannot loosen it - i thought it should only be finger tight!
is there anything else i can use (pref that can be removed with a screwdriver) if and when i remove it

If you only do it up finger tight next time, it won't be a problem.
To remove- metal tyre lever, fat flat bit in and wedge it so that it locks in place- should give you enough leverage to undo it.
I haven't got one of the tools, so I use the lid off this:

do you really need to undo the pinch bolts ?? They don't seem to interfere with each other at all on mine (I've taken the "cap" out on 1 crank after fitting - because previously it fell out & so I've only got 1 between 2 cranksets these days)
20p piece for on the trail removal.
1. Undo the pinch bolts
2. Undo the star cap thing
3. Don't forget to lift up the safety tab thing hidden in the clamp section
Something like that, works for me
