[Closed] Hope Pro II hubs - What rims?

Will be looking to get a new set of wheels in the not too distant future.

Am pretty swung on the Hope Pro II hubs (colour TBC 😆 ) but I am after some advice on rims.

Looking to go on a Soul to run 2.2in tyres.

Ride fairly light and have yet to properly prang a wheel.....so light would be an aim too.

So then any suggestions?

Cheers,

Mark

Stan's 355 for tubeless, Mavic 717 for non tubeless. Easy.

I'm just in the process of bulding myself a set into some DT xr4.2's & they're looking really nice.
I tend to only run upto 2.1's though. Stans seem very popular at the moment too

if you're after handbuilds, have a chat with a decent lbs if you have one?
Or Hope Hoops are nicely built, but not often available in colours

Think you can get them in colours but only from Hope service centres.

Winstanleys are usually cheapest I think but mixed reviews on their service.

I'm on the heavier end of the scale and have Stan's Flows (the slightly beefier version of the 355). Happy with 'em!

EEK.....Not considered tubeless - that be witchcraft in these parts! 😆

Think I would want to stick with standard rims at the moment.

What are peoples thoughts on the XC717 & XM719's?

I've got 719/819s on one bike - they are very tough but probably heavier than you need. Mine stood up to the Mega ok with my clumsy 16 stone bulk on top of them.

Not used 717s but I had a feeling they are not that much lighter than 719s.

BTW you really should go tubeless 🙂

Is there much of an additional cost over and above the price of the wheels 😕

Complete newbie when it comes to anything not stuffed with a rubber tube 😆

Is there much of an additional cost over and above the price of the wheels

Roll of 'yellow tape' (about a tenner)
couple of valves (about a fiver each)
majik white jizm juice (about a tenner)

so roughly £30 to do a set of wheels

look on the 'Just Riding Along' website for good info....

As hilldodger says.

Although if you never pinch flat then I might not bother - I used to all the time.

Plus going tubeless gives you the opportunity to post about how it took five bottles of washing-up liquid, a gallon of tyre jizm and an industrial grade compressor to get your tyres inflated 😉

😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

On that single opinion it looks like tubes for me.

On a separate note...

Spent over an hour (per tyre) trying to get an Onza Porc replica onto my Magura (DT?) rims. 😈

Did not end well.

But back on topic.

I guess I can use a tubeless rim with a tubed set up? 😕

No - tubeless is pretty easy with Stans rims, if you want to run tubes just use the 'yellow tape' as rim tape.
I'm not sure if there's potential issues with the diameter of the valve that some tubes use, I'm sure someone here will know.......

Back to the OP, handbuilt Pro II + DT 4.2 has to be about the lightest combo with reasonable strength. Fine for up to about 2.25 max

Letmetalktomark:

I was similarly convinced that tubleless was the work of the devil and couldn't for the life of me work out what was going on. Had no idea what most on here were on about! But a ridiculous number of punctures last year (I currently boast the largest collection of tubes "awaiting repair" in the UK) pushed me into trying out a set of Stan's Flows as tubeless. Early days yet, but apart from a comedy hour with a leaking valve, they were easy to set up. So far so good as well, have now SMASHED my record and had 4 rides without a puncture - and it's hedge-murdering time around here. Oh and they ride well too.

Conclusion: Well worth giving a go especially if you are inflicted with thorns.
