Just thought I would share an issue I experienced when fitting a PF41 Bottom Bracket to my Giant Anthem x29er.

I know it must be an issue these days with so many 'standards' in the bike business to sell a product that fits all makes. But thought would share this with you as Giant are obviously one of the numerous brands that make use of the Pressfit standard.

I replaced the Shimano XT pressfit unit as the drive size cups seem to have a habit of squeaking.

To fit the Hope PF41 I also purchased the Hope installation tool.

The issue is with the dimensions of the Giant bottom bracket shell and the interference with the inner part of the PF41 non-drive side cup.

The outer diameter of inner section of the non-drive side cup is I measured it 37.5mm. The centre bore for of the Giant bottom bracket shell is c.36.5 / 36.25mm as best I could measure. Therefore the non-drive side cup can not be pressed in fully (c.3-4mm gap) as there is a interference. I would have liked to say I measured and checked all this before fitting the part, but I didn't ha!

Here are some pictures that perhaps explain:

pdf since onedrive has helpfully prevented static urls for BB code..

I have sent the note to Hope to see what they think, could just be a case of bicycle 'standards' strike again..

The Hope press fit BB doesn't fit Anthem's, Hope know about it as they used to use Giant frames as the staff bikes. It's to do with the stepped giant shell, not the bb.

Yep does not fit, though minor mod with the lathe had it sorted.

The instructions should really state that you need a min internal bb shell diameter 38.5/39mm would work for it to fit, though must be a pain to allow for all manufacturers.

Sure they could mod the design a bit to allow it to be fitted to more bikes, giant owners must be a big slice of potential customers?

This is also a problem for the Trance 27.5 2014 frame. I wanted to replace my BB with this. Gone for xtr instead.

theflatboy,

no keeping the tool. With the lathe mod to the Hope part I managed to fit the BB to my Anthem and also it can be used for other BB I have on other bikes.

Sure Hope could update the design to solve the issue to allow more to fit it..

Similar problem with BB30 in a CAADX. There's a step up in the BB shell that stops you using Praxis (or similar) converters. The Wheels Manufacturing one has enough clearance if anyone's in a similar position.
