Hi,
I've got a 160 hope floater that's rattling, it's only a few rides old, is this normal??...I don't want to send it back if its a characteristic of the rotor..??

Cheers

Not even the one I had with worn rivets rattled (you could just feel the rivets move forward and back if you held front brake on and rocked the front wheel).

None of mine ever have

I assume you have checked it is secure and not hitting anything?
Is it deffo the rotor - ie you have removed it and the rattle goes?

And of course ask Hope they are ace

None of my 8 rattle at all. Or any of the 20 or so I've fitted for friends. The float is radially when they get hot, not laterally so they can rattle.

The motorcycle ones are designed to float laterally. This allows the pads to sit closer to the rotor and therefore give greater hydraulic leverage for a more powerful brake. They drag, but the float is there to allow for a slight rotor wobble.

The Hope brakes are designed to clear the rotor at all times. The floating function is to allow the rotor to expand out when it gets hot rather than warping and catching the pads.

Motorcycle ones should rattle, mountain bike one should not.

I bought one off here with a slight bit of play between the spider and the rotor - the guy told me Hope had told him it was normal. I guess he could have been lying.

Never noticed it while riding the bike.

Already spoke to Hope about this and they advised that they shouldn't rattle.

However the fix was easy, I used a fire poker, a socket to support the underside of the rivet and a large hammer to 'tighten' the rivets up.

They've been fine ever since.

had one start to rattle a couple of months after buying it then a huge amount of play quickly developed. the legendary customer services at hope told me it was wear and tear and to do one when i asked for a replacement. managed to get a new one after a few emails and mailing proof of purchase to them.

Mine all rattled once they developed the "abnormal wear" that they all had. Hope were quick to replace them each time though.

I've had a few 160's rattle when the rivets have developed play.
183's have all been fine though. The alloy spider seems thicker on the 183's.
