They're really annoying! gather grit and then just make scratchy noises. GRRR! ๐ฟ
Anyone just removed them and done without?
No one?
never really had a problem with mine? have you watched the video on hopes website about maintaining them? it does say, 9 time out of 10, that all the noise from their BBs is those seals needing cleaning, not bearings needing replacing
I went back to a shimano one! ๐
yip. that sounds about right. just cleaned the inside of the seal and it was fine.
Yeah I've seen the vid, but having to take your cranks off to clean the damned grit out all the time is a bit of a pisstake, no?
only had to do it once. no more dirt got in despite several dozen muddy rides.
I have to clean around mine all the time.
CK for me next i think ๐
as above, only done it once, plus the cranks take seconds to remove if you are just running a front mech. not that big a deal unless your running an enclosed chain device like an LG1 or similar
Totally agrre with you the moment you ride your bike in wet gritty conditions - hey thats EVERY ride at the moment it starts making a right old racket
Not just my bike either my mates hope does exactly the same.
Plus the seals on the bearing themselves are naff - my bb had grit in the bearings after just a couple of rides (its just not sealed well enough) - once its completly knackered i'll be going back to shimano - or I might see if Santa will get me a chris king BB
Acros are better sealed.
My ceramic Hope has done about 2k this year and is now on its 3rd frame - no problems whatsoever.
I don't understand what you mean about grit on the plastic cover, the rotation of the crankarm should just wipe it clean every revolution, but then what cranks are you running?
I dont think Acros are any better IME. I have an Acros on my new Dialled Alpine. Its now on its second bike. the reason it has lasted is that ive cleaned out the bearings twice and put in some super sticky grease. i bought a new Hope unit to replace it when it finally dies. the seals on the hope if anything look a bit better than the Acros to me.
Riding in this weather its all about what grease the BB has in it and how much! Worth topping up if u can. I like the idea of the grease guard type BBs from King. I think Pace are doing that too? Failing that Shimano are now supposed to be better now...maybe they are putting better grease in..
Second that. I've used the Acros 2 year guarantee twice. No better life span than shimano.
Oddly, their headsets which use the same seal design seem to be pretty good.
I went with a king BB in the end and I', using the tool to grease it ever month. Seems about right with the wet weather we've been having.
Scienceofficer,
Did you regrease them as per the instructions?
They require no more or less maintenance than any other BB out there. I also assume that they were repaired or replaced without question?
J
I notice the noise to but just figure the seals are doing there job since every time I clean them the bearings are relatively clean. The parts are all replaceable in the hope so you can replace just the bearings which is much cheaper than buying 2 bb's each winter.
jonnymojo is right really.
I have done mine once and riden about 5 times since in muddy conditions and mines still making no noise at all.
it takes literally a couple of minutes just to clean those seals, not really a big deal.
Although, my intense has a particularly stubborn E13 chain device which does make it annoying.
I'm running 2bikes with acros bb and rate them highly.one is new one has been hammered through the peaks grinding paste all year with only a quick seal wipe needed.the plastic sheild is very brittle unlike hope but a free set of replacement sheilds was sent from balfa/across. They seriously spin better than hope and I only use the stainless. Also like the grips if a little fast wearing are super sticky even in the monsoon weather we have had.
