Got a 4 week break booked back in old Blighty this July and August. I'm planning to take a week out and head up to the Scottish Highlands for a bit of mtb adventure. I know its going to be the height of the dreaded midge season, but thats the time I've got to go, so just have to get on with it.

I'm trying to decide where to head, preferably somewhere I can get to by train and where I can get 4 or 5 days top riding from the same base.

Any ideas / suggestions? Torridon seems to be getting a lot of great feedback, but not sure about getting there and whether I can fill a week?

So, give me some inspiration please guys and gals.

Aviemore - loads of routes around there, including some overnighters, and you can get the train elsewhere for some other days out.

Not thought of Aviemore, looks like a possible option. Certainly looks easier to get to than Torridon.

It is easy, with loads of riding, really varied rides as well (Laggan trails to a Cairngorm loop)

There is a rail station at achnashellach the other side of some of the good torridon rides but not much else! More civilisation at avimore. Think you can get train to fortwilliam too.

Whereever you decide on take the train. You can get the caladonian express sleeper train to fort William, or Inverness and on to torridon. It's a great way to start a trip up there and I think it's the best way to get there from England. If you're travelling alone its not a lot more than the cost of driving. Plus you don't spend a whole day travelling up there to arrive knackered...

Thanks for the info, I was thinking that there were no lines near Torridon as they don't all seem to show up on Google maps. A bit more delving around needed I think.

Get off the train at Bridge of Orchy and ride the West Highland Way to Fort William?

Aviemore might be good for riding but has almost none of the magic of the highlands IMO - go to Torridon. West is best.
