Hi all.

I'm looking for some route advice for High Street please.

Heading over to the the Lakes next weekend and plan to do High Street on the Saturday. I've sketched out a possible route but would like some guidance as the best way to ride High Street and whether my route would be ok.

Planned route -
Start Patterdale
Head South to Hartsop
Hartsop > climb to High Street up Hayeswater gill
North along High Street to The Cockpit
The Cockpit > Howtown > Martindale

Is it best to return to Patterdale through Boredale or the Ullswater bridleway?

The route's fine - it's a slog up from the tarn to high street but fine from there. Ullswater bridleway is more fun as long as it's not rammed with walkers (not likely if it's a nice day), boredale head to boredale hause climb starts out OK but just keeps getting worse to the top - need to be careful on the way back down to Patterdale too as nothing's waymarked up there so you might accidentally stumble onto a cheeky option down.

That's the right way round to do it certainly. Hartsop up to High Street is an hour (at least) of push/carry. It's one of those routes that every MTBer should do at least once but just be prepared for it! Return via the Ullswater BW but beware that it can get very busy on nice weekends with walkers and it's quite techy in places.

I was up High Street a few weeks ago. Down in Ambleside I was in shorts + short sleeves; on the ridge I was wearing knee warmers and waterproof so go prepared. It's a long day out but in good weather the views are incredible.

Thanks

It'll probably be late afternoon when we are heading back so I think we'll chance the Lakeside route.

Just need to hope for decent weather now

We started at Hartsop and at the Straits of Riggindale continued on to Thornthwaite Beacon and then turned round and came back down to the Straits and then High Raise and down to Ullswater. Dropped down via Arthurs Pike which was very fast ๐Ÿ˜€ We chose to come back over Boredale Hause as we reckoned it would be very busy along Ullswater on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Faboulous day out.

great route but take plenty of water. I ran out 2/3rds of the way round. I know a number of other people have said that happened to them too!

great day out

Thanks for the pics - looks a great ride. I hope it's as lovely as that next week.

How much water would be enough (assuming seasonal avg temps) - 3 litres?
