[Closed] High Roller II - knobs tearing after a limited number of rides?

As above really. I've probably only ridden the tyre for 6 - 8 rides, each of 2 to 3 hours. Several of the knobs, predominantly the wider spaced ones in the centre, are showing signs of imminently being torn off.
Anyone else experienced this? It's probably going to be down to bad technique doing something or other, in which case please flame me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

showing signs of imminently being torn off.

Mine cracked around the knobs fairly quickly too, but it's had a lot of riding since on some very rocky trails and hasn't deteriorated beyond that.

Oh, and you're obviously doing it wrong.

Mine did the eaxact same, 152km of riding according to Strava. Sent back to Next day tyres for a full refund, no probs. Bought a Shorty for the front at the same time as I bought the HR2, and it's not showing any cracks at all, can only assume a defective batch or summit.

I was quite glad tbf, as it was shite as a rear tyre on my local trails anyway.

Mine is a 2.3 Exo 3C in 29in - for reference.

Not arsed about sending it back as it was cheap from France and still works fine. Really like it as a front tyre in fact, think it might have toppled the Minion DHF in my affections.

Thanks.
Mine's on the rear, it's a 3C MaxTerra Exo in (whisper it) 650B. I'll take a picture and email NextDayTyres for their opinion.

What compound, where do you ride etc?

On soft terrain I've never a problem but in hardpack trails with soft tyres it's easy to tear tread, I ran a Magic Mary at BPW in March when we had that glorious mini heatwave and could feel the spikes squirming around in those, when I checked at the end of the day some looked close to coming off.

Maxxis rubber (even in normal 60/62a compound) seems softer than most, in Super Tacky 42a it's awesome but longevity suffers, I doubt it's anything you're doing and I doubt there's a problem with the tyres, it just happens sometimes at the tyre-terrain interface.

The only caveat I would add, a lot of riders at the moment are running silly low pressures and the tyres end up squirming around all over the place....they weren't designed for this, see the recommended pressures to see just how far out some people are....at low pressures the tread will twist around more on the trail and be liable to tearing, you need enough pressure so the carcass can support the tyre/tread properly....I've come across people using single digit psi and raving about the grip but it must be like riding with a flat and none of the manufacturers to my knowledge design their tyres to work like that.

The LBS I use has a good reputation and is involved in grassroots DH racing around here, they run a team and link in with other promoters etc, when I went over to Magic Mary's they recommended 25psi...less than Schwalbe recommend but still enough to work as intended and not end up with horrible squirmy handling and torn tread.

Mine was the same after a few rides but it's been on now for a good few months and nothing is broken / tyre works fine

I tend to run mine around 26psi on the rear. I have ridden around the lakes, other than that usually in the surrey hills.
I need something to stand up to the Alps (first timer) in July, I thought HRII was the default Alpine tyre.

I've been using high rollers for a while, and have always found them a bit prone to tearing around the edge of the knobs, have even had them split,I just accept it as a down side to a great tyre.

Mine was a maxterra exo too.

Deviant, I have to disagree, tyres pumped too hard cause the tread to be unsupported, not too soft.

Too hard, too soft....both are detrimental to the tyres, they should be inflated to roughly what they are designed for, no body suggested pumping up tyres too hard until you mentioned it.

Nobody mentioned too soft until you did, don't really see your point with that one?.

I don't think too soft is detrimental to the tread, as there is more of a contact patch and so load and forces are spread over more of the tread. Definitely detrimental to side walls, but not so tread.

The 3C Minion on the back of my bike is in a far worse state than the older by 4 months non-3C HR2 on the front.

Its the compound. I have the soft compound one up front and hard one on rear. Soft compound on the rear wears really quick and nobs to start to crack. I run fron 18 - 20 psi and rear @ 22 psi nothing to do with tyre pressure

Mine was a right state, most concerning was that the knobs weren't tearing off as such, the cracks were going radially into they tyre carcass. I don't think it would have been too long before I started tearing holes in the tyre.
