Help with boost chainsets and 11/12 speed please

I need a boost chainset for what will be an 11sp build but with the ability (perhaps) to put a 12sp chainring on in the future.

So im looking at deore/slx/xt chainsets. Am i correct in thinking that x000 chainsets are boost but 11sp and take a 96mm 4 bolt chainring.

That x100 chainsets are boost, and take an 11sp direct mount chainring or a 12sp chainring.

That x130 chainsets are boost, 12speed and direct mount? Or are they superboost.

Im also perplexed by boost being in the chainring offset and not the cranks. Also what is super boost? Shimano seem to do non boost, boost 52mm and boost 55mm chainline.

Im worried im going to buy the wrong parts if i can even find them available.

A concise explanation would really help.

Basically... Despite what Shimano says... Their 55mm is effectively Superboost (or the same as a SRAM 0mm offset chainring) and their 52mm is effectively Boost. I have heard of many situations people ordering a 55mm offset for their normal Boost bike, and having issues with too wide a chainline, or particular problems if any kind of chain device was involved.

The fact the offset is in the ring makes it easier IMO... Also means you don't need to worry too much moving a crank between bikes, you potentially only have to swap the chainring if going from Boost to Superboost.

As for 11 vs 12spd rings... 11 and 12spd chains have the same internal width. I've run 11spd chains on 12spd rings and vice versa... Only Shimano or SRAM will tell you there's any difference, none of the aftermarket guys would. Certainly I haven't been able to tell any difference! Mind you 10spd chains work fine on 11/12spd narrow/wide rings too anyway...

Aftermarket companies specifically make Shimano 9-11 and 12 speed chainrings separately.

I've failed to get an 11-speed quicklink to fit a SRAM Eagle set up.

However on Sunday I managed to fit an 11-speed link to a 12-speed NX system when a link broke on a kid's bike... it confused me.

12 spd Shimano rings have a different profile to work with their 12 spd chains. An 11 spd chain won’t be retained as well as a 12spd chain.

52mm (X100) is for 142 or 148, 55mm (X120) for 148 where more chainstay clearance is required and 56.5mm (X130) is for 157 rear ends.

Shimano only make 12spd DM rings to suit these, but other brands make 11spd specific ones to fit if need be.

If in your shoes, I’d fit a Shimano 12spd ring and chain, and use that with either 11 or 12 spd cassette etc. The 12 spd chain works fine on an 11 spd cassettes - where there are obviously no retention issues as their are on a chainring.

When you say 11sp 96 4 bolt are you referring to the m6000, m7000, m8000 chainsets with the asymmetric spider, I'd go for the newer direct mount chainring versions, the older asym cranks would give weird chainlines with aftermarket rings for example the normal m8000 gave a 49 or 50mm chainline with oneup, blackspire, superstar or uberbike rings, the older 11sp boost version with shimano ring gave 53mm chainline if Im not mistaken, which is closer to the new normal chainline.

Ok, so i have a pr on bnib Shimano SLX M7120 165mm cranks that are not correct. I also have a M7100/M7130 12sp chainring that seems redundant?

Am i correct that i want 7100 cranks or indeed 8100 for the correct chainline? Will i be able to use my new chainring with that?

I have an slx 7120 crank with blackspire snaggletooth direct mount ring which is described as being for 9-12 speed systems. Running a sram nx eagle 12s chain. 11 speed deore cassette.
boost frame (aether 9)

chainline seems perfect and no clearance issues.

in what way are your cranks not correct? Identical to mine…

Actually I’ve remembered now when I fitted the cranks I put both spacers on the nds to give 52mm chainline…

It was 18 months ago and I’d forgotten but just been in the shed and checked.

Part number 6 in the picture. one either side for 55mm chainline, both on nds for 52

Slightly bigger q factor than 7100 if that matters. cant say i notice.

And I’ve a top chain guide fitted that didn’t need to be spaced away from the frame. In fact it only gets close to rubbing the chain in the 51 cog at the back.

Just use a 12-speed chainset. It will work fine with an 11-speed chain.
I ran a 12-speed SLX M7100 chainset on my hardtail with 11-speed chain, cassette and derailleur for 18 months without any trouble at all. Changed the DM chainring to an Absolute Black Oval 12s and that works fine as well.

Ah @docrobster I think you've answered a question I had in another post on the chainline on my slash. Currently running it at 55mm but the chainline is crap for the lowest gear so I was wondering if I could swap the spacer over to the nds as long I don't have any other clearance issues. Glad to hear you can do it and things don't explode. Cheers 😊

I use various 11sp chains on Shimano DM, Blackspire, Superstar and Burgtec rings with no problems.

Thank you for posting this. Amazing coincidence as I considererd doing this on my new built which is boost. There is an obvious "chainline bias" towards the small cog which doesn't make much sense. I would prefer a bias towards the big one. I reckon the 5mm change will either equalise things or reverse the bias towards the big cog. Any adverse effect of the left crank now being further away to the frame than the right one?
