Just realised, I dont actually understand one of my offers- from Edinburgh, for Mech.Eng.

"This offer is subject to you obtaining

Obtain grades ABB at GCE A-Level in 3 subjects including

Mathematics, including grades ABB in 2 subjects including at

least 1 from Design & Technology and Physics but excluding

General Studies in 2008/09"

Wossat mean?

Im doing Physics, Maths, D&T, and Business Studies btw

Ta, Duane 🙂

LOL - I am just about to grad from Mech eng at edinburgh...

means you have to get abb in your subjects,
they specifiy it as if you were say doing another alevel - art for example then you could get ABBE with the E in math, and in you would meet a criteria of ABB, but they are specifing you have to use Math in you ABB.. and then the same with the second subject...

you don't want to ask my opinion of Edinburgh Uni, not if you are planning to come here!
In all seriousness if you want to know anything please ask, I am also a warden in pollock halls, so if you have any specifics please ask or email.

From face value (and what I remember of the UCAS system)

You need an A, and 2 B's (but not in General Studies)

You need maths A level

You need 1 of DT or Physics A level

The other A level can be anything else (but not general studies)

I adore Ed as a city is outstanding, the Uni, i fear has lost its way with a few things and engeering is one of them...
where you coming from?
where else have you applied?
Theres a really good uni cycle club, very active and travels a lot. The uni provides cycle sheds at halls but only outdoor railing type clamps at most uni buildings, i have my fs hidden away but my trip into uni is done on an old SS (is walkable, and tbh you will prob walk with friends most of the time, just i have to go at random times alone for projects)

I live in N. Wales

My first choice is Bath, but that needs AAA (in Phy and Maths), cant see myself getting an A in phys.

Also offers from Bristol and Southampton (both AAA) and Nottingham (AAB).

Think Id have a much better time at Ed than at Nott (and I dont just mean getting smashed).

I live in nottingham normally...
Ed's biggest downside to you i would say is the extra year? but what a place to spend it. I am not as well versed on the uni league tables these days but i would have put bristol above notts and both above here. Edinburgh has a great reputation, 27th best in the world, and we have a lot of yanks come here because of that rep and they have never heard of any uni uni's you name bar Cambridge and Oxford, so its status is grand and in some respects it does deserve it, Dolly the sheep was cloned by a professor still teaching here! The royal college of surgeons is based here! i hear the electrical engineering research is amongst the finest in the land!. Now to the mechanical engineering... Bugger! The first year at ed in engineering is the same for mech, civil, electronics (i think) and so it is covering the basics and given decent alevel grades it is a good starting place to get you settled. but the engineering facilities are not comparable to other unis. The practical equipment is not the most modern against what is being used in other uni's nevermind industry, Ed does have great interest in renewables and is a leader here but not really on a level that will affect you as a student. The uni does teach management well, and given that is where most engineers are destined...

Not trying to be gloom and doom, and i am certainly not alone in these feelings, Are you planning B.Eng? or M.eng?

Cheers.

Yeah, realise Bristol and Notts are above Ed, but Bristol is AAA (and I prefer Bath), and Notts, dunno, the biking sucks 😛

Dont think Im tooo fussed about the extra year? Dunno, neither here nor there...

Once your on the course can you not move up to the MEng if your doing well enough? Im sure thats how it was when i was at plymouth!
Gives you a little more flexibility on grades, though probably doesnt guarantee you a place on the MEng

I'm on the industrial advisery board for the mech eng dept at Bristol which met last week..... think yourself lucky that it's only AAA - given the number applicants for the numbers of available places for the next academic year (2010), the selection criteria/A-level offers that will be going out is quite scary!!

I wouldn't rule Notts out, the engineering department is pretty good, although I come from the sparky side of things, but I think the spanner lot are pretty good too..

Plus, the riding isn't that bad straight out of the door, plus you have the Peak only 45 minutes away, and accessable by public transport...
