I've got a new KCNC cassette, and a new sl-9 chain. (Gold) Very nice setup and when on the bike stand the gears index fine. However when I get on the bike and ride the chain seems to slip, pretty severe to be honest. Had to abondon after about 1/2 mile. Can't quiet fathom it out, the cassette is installed ok etc.

Anyone help would be much appreciated.!

cheers

Chainrings? Are they new?

full-sus ? maybe it's ghost shifting (don't see why it should start just as you change to new stuff - maybe a chain's laterally stiffer when brand new ?)

I tend to get chainsuck rather than skipping if I use a new chain with old chainring - could it be sucking badly enough to pull round and then "rip" off the chainring with a jolt ?

Yeah - its a raceface deus single 32t up front. Cassette is a 12-27. Just tried a spare used XT chain and it inproved slightly? I've also just popped off the cassette and it seems fine? I've run this combo before on a diff bike with no problems.

I've just read an identical thread in weight weenies. He abandoned it in the end. Seems weird though as I've done that combo before.. Its a hardtail. Chainring New

Stiff Link - What's that.?

stiff link; exactly as it sounds - one of the links may not rotate freely arounf the roller and so might not sit smoothly on the cassette cogs (I suppose it'd be worst on the 12t sprocket). you can take off chain & pull it over your finger - stiff link would become obvious (easily sorted with a good chain tool, or maybe even just a bit of [s]bending[/s] ROTATING the link to ease it)

It's not a really thick DH ring is it ? - maybe chain's too narrow for it ?

stiff links as in, where you've split and rejoined the chain if the pin isn't bang on central it can make the link bind.

Stiff link, means a link that won't move freely like the others. Easy to check for this, just stand the bike up and back pedal the cranks, then watch as the chain goes round the jockey wheels on the rear mech, a stiff link won't "bend" round the jockey wheels like the other links and will just stay er stiff...

Nope - Not stiff at all.??? Just need a stiff drink now. Have another go in the morning! Luckily on my cancer research charity ride my pal leant me one of his or I'd be still pushing around now!

Little update for anyone who still may need info.
Swapped the back wheel for a pals
My Bike - XT cassette - KMC Chain - XTR rear mech - It worked perfectly..
Put my wheel on his bike - KCNC cassette - XT Chain - XT rear mech - It worked perfectly..

Trying to work out what the crack is. Maybe its just my frame/dropouts/gearing that does'nt like what I'm trying to do.

One last attempt I'm going to put a XT Cassette onto my bike insted of the KCNC, if it works I'll keep and worry about the extra weight when I'm finally riding the bloody thing!!!

Watch those scandium sprockets too, they tend to snap, that'll cause some slipping! Having read various reviews the KCNC cassettes really are a step too far in weight saving I reckon!

I've used one before on a hardtail I used to have and it was really impressive. I ride pretty light so I kinda can manage. I've heard some about shockers too.

Shame this one's not gone the same way! If they did 10 speed ones in MTB ratios and I could get one at trade I'd probably try one, but not even the team riders seem to use them, which is enough for me!

I'm a fan of the 12-27 ratio which is the main reason I went for it.
Ah well stuck a nice XT cassette on for time being and guess what it works a treat!! Looks like my spesh project bike has a new completely over the top uber trick cassette to go with the SLX !! he he he

Why not use Dura Ace 9 speed cassettes if you want 12-27? Relatively cheap, pretty light, and reliable.

Check to see if any of the teeth are bent/twisted (thou this sometimes happens on used cassettes)

Not a big fan on KCNC cassettes after my girlfriend been useing one this season on her race bike, She ONLY used it for races, (all new drive train start of year) NPS and a few Southerns races, I been keeping a eye on chain wear, and replaced the chain just befor .75 and went for a spin and gears skiping, got another new chain (diff make) still skiped. so had to put back old chain for one/two races. Now her bike is back to XTR and a new Chain.

having to get rid of a cassette because it worn so much with 1 chain is no good, think you should get at lest 2-3 chains to 1 cassette.

Maybe the chain hasn't the lateral movement to cope with the chain line from a single front chainring, and/or the cassette teeth are too 'sharp' to release the chain?

Was it in all the gears?

b r - In all the gears but the highest. You could be onto something there
