[Closed] Help please! Axles too 'thick' for dropouts?

Just building a new bike, and had a problem. Basically the axle on the back wheel doesn't fit in the drop outs. It's not the overall width of the axle, it's the diameter of the axle sections that have to slide down into the dropouts. It's not the frame, as I slipped a Shimano-hubbed wheel in fine.

Measured the axle against the Shimano one. The problematic one is 10mm, the Shimano one 9mm. The 10mm won't go in my on-one frame either....

Goldtec Draco rear hub by the way (bought on here :)). The only option on the Goldtec website would be that this has a Yeti conversion? Do Yetis have different size dropouts or something daft?

Very confused

It's probably only the thickness of the finish thats stopping you, I remember filing the finish out of the dropouts when I built an Orange Msisle years ago. Shimano front is 9mm, shimano rear is 10mm.

hmmm.....thanks for clarification on axle sizes. My vernier measurements were probably overenthusiastic, but it still doesn't explain why the Goldtec wheel won't go in another frame either (an old one with no real potential for the finsih to be the problem)

I'm having this issue too with a new frame. Basically some axles are a bit closer to 10mm than others - I've got a DT RWS 10mm skewer than comes up about 9.99mm, whereas most other axles come out nearer 9.0. The dropout should be crack on 10.00, so by the time you've got a good thick coat of paint on there you've got a real interference fit.

Try scraping/filing the paint off the inside of the dropout slot - might well make the difference.

(It's not all bad though - its nice to know that the paint job is nice and thick - should last longer!)

I once had this problem - I had put the axle nut on my mavic's back to front - it had a thick end and a thin end - the thick one wouldn't fit in the dropout.

Doesn't sound like your problem as it's both ends, but worth a look?

Shimano front is 9mm, shimano rear is 10mm.

Well one learns something new every day! I always assumed they were the same size and I didn't believe this - but the verniers don't lie!
