There's all manner of ways of doing it, but I usually put a bolt in mine and tap it in with a hammer. If it goes to one side, tap the bolt the other way.
A Hope Head Doctor is easy to fit, but costs a lot more....
Or nip to your LBS with a nice smile and a packet of Jaffa Cakes.

normally a lbs has a tool that fits it once the steerer is the right length. To do it diy im not sure - getting it straight might be tricky!
Tbh i never used one - just used an fsa headset with a conix..does me fine.

Believe it or not, but a extension piece off a 3/8" socket set is the ideal tool for DIY insertion - the socket head sits nicely across the star nut and enters the head tube with just a small amount of clearance - you do not get the star nut wobbling sideways etc...
What I do is once the steerer is cut to the correct length, fit the forks to the bike, with everything in place. I the screw the "star nut thingy" into the bolt a few turns with the stem cap in place, then hold the stem cap flat on the top of the stem and tap the top of the bolt until just the head of the bolt is showing, then just tighten it all up.

I've done it twice with a sacrificial bolt and hammer but I feel a bit silly not spending the extra few pounds when I've spent several hundred on forks so next time I'll get the tool.
If you use a bolt then the longer the better as it helps keep it straight.

I put the SFN in before cutting the steerer as cutting can cause a lip that's hard to get over.
file it after cutting!!
POP with a bolt and hammer. not really that scary or difficult. rather than tapping the bolt to the side if it starts going astray, tap the higher side of SFN with flat screw driver. once the SFN is below the lip of the steerer it's just a case of tapping it down to the right height.
Now need new brake adapter and a star fangled nut, looks like they wont be getting fitted tonight

If DIYing, keep the fleshy bits of your hands well clear - it hurts if you trap some just before hammering!
Had to just sort of tear it clear.
i work in a lbs and i just fit these foc, takes 2 mins, so i would imagine any other lbs would do the same ( we arnt all scrooges lol)
azzyp - you're far too generous. if somebody brought to my shop a £600 pair of forks that they had bought somewhere else and expected me to fit a sfn for free I'd tell them to get it done where they bought the fork from. or obviously fit it for £5, or sell them the proper tool.
