I'm giving myself a lot of [probably] unnecessary hassle about buying a new bike.

After giving up (just about) on finding anything that will fit my comedy-sized body (6' 5") on fleabay, I've taken to cruising round bike shops looking for something suitable. The trouble is, I know what I would like, or at least I know what my heart would like, and this differs from what I can justify to myself and my wife for the money I have and the riding that I do and intend to do. So in true modern style, I thought I'd ask the internet. Google rarely lies to me (ell, sort of) and Singletrack has been good in the past for gaining a [sensible] consensus opinion...

Here's what I'm going to be using the bike for:
Commuting
Trail riding (local mostly, so Thetford & Rendlesham forests, Chicksands etc)
General mucking about in the local area (small jumps, drops etc)

Here are my options:
1) Specialized Rockhopper SL (£699 from LBS) - Bite the bullet and buy the entry level Rockhopper with the big-ass frame, accept the components for what they are (decent) and ride a hardtail just like in the days before by pride and joy got stolen, and enjoy it for what it is... A light, simple, decent bike that will do all the above. This is the bike that my brain is urging me to accept as the choice, knowing full well that I will never need anything as awesome as...

2) Stumpjumper FSR, or just the plain FSR (£1800 or £1100 from LBS) - Bite an even bigger bullet (or get the cost spread over a year) and buy the bike that will do everything I want to do (see above), and more. Probably more than I _would_ ever want to do with it, but have a bike that was amazing. Tough to justify from a financial point of view, or a riding one (given that I live in a place known for its fens, not mountains, and the only time I get to go to places with mountains I tend to be a bit occupied with other things), but the choice of my heart.

3) Buy something similar to the above two options off the net in the largest size I can find, with the best spec for the money (Rocky Mountain Vertex 30 for example) and hope that the "blind date" works and we live happily ever after.

I think I know the answer myself, but I could do with honest advice on what other people in the same position have done.

Cheers.
