Currently set up singlespeed 32t x 16t

Need to get some gears on it, It's been nearly two years healing/minimal biking  but I'm still popping a recurring injury overextending on hills so need to go easy if I'm going to continue cycling so easier = better

This is what I have as pictured

Alivio square taper cranks

9spd freehub with SS kit cog and spacers

9spd chain and Shimano 32t ring

Sliding dropout with rear hanger

This is what I have in spare box

SLX 9spd shifter (R/H

SRAM PG970 9spd cassette 11/32

9spd chain

Any advice much appreciated as am 1x newbie!  Not sure what ring, chain device etc to spec.  Or if the 11-32 cassette is what I need

Also have a (RD-M760) XT short cage rear mech 👍🏼

What could I expect if I fit a BB mount chain device and all of the above?  Or would an old front mech even do the job?

Cheapest route would be a wide range 9spd cassette like this:

Or you could just use your 11-32 and a narrow / wide chainring around 30T. Chain device would probably be a good idea too but a front mech would work with a NW chainring.</span>

You might need a hanger extender to get your mech to clear the big sprocket if you got a bigger cassette

LOL.... I put a 10sp on my 2012 NS Core because what I had in spares was cheaper than SS

Anyway, what I found was 32/11-32 was damned hard work for riding just round Swinley at a 8yr old's XC speed.

Part of the reason to take it out was to get a bit more workout when with Jnr and his race buddies than I'd get on another bike but it probably over-exceeded 😀

The thing is about 2.5 tonnes... (honestly never weighed it but freakin heavy!)

Half the fun I'd expected on the "off-piste" decents I didn't really exploit as I was still trying to breath....(and this is Swinley not Afan).... So I'd say go a bit bigger.... e.g. wide range joemmo recommends... or just try it... (you got the cassette anyway so if it works for you no cost)

I'd just whack it all on and see how you get on.  If you keep dropping the chain get a narrow/wide chainring, bigger or smaller than the one you've got, depending on how you've got on. When the cassette wears out, you can get an 11-34 or an 11-36 if you need/want.

Realised you don't have a derailleur. Don't think the are any 9 speed clutch mechs, but not the end of the world. I have 1x9 on my commuter, which I take off road a fair bit. Narrow/wide ring in the front, aged xt 9 speed mech. Hardly ever do a chain.  Narrow/wide takes care of most of the chain retention.

^ I do still have a rear derailleur, not a clutch mech. I might just try to bag a deal on a Sunrace + NW and see how that goes.  May have to sell the short XT mech to fund a clutch type

A clutch isn't a necessity IME.

A NW ring does 95% of the chain retention, its well worth the ~£20-30 one typically costs these days...

I'd start with the old 11-32 cassette and if you need to later find a cheap 11-40 perhaps?

Hang on M760 mech you say? That the Rapid rise one? Will that stretch beyond 32t?

^ Yep.  If you look closely I marker penned one driveside dropout bolt where it slips.  It tends to happen when hard braking or casing. One bolt on the driveside always seemed to be about to give out when tightening so only three of four could be cinched up remotely securely.

Orange have offered to sell me a redesigned dropout that I believe requires drilling out the 3rd hole normally used for racks/guards.  Not ideal but needs must.  For the moment I'm trying a slightly longer M5 bolt with threadlocked nut on the back.  Seems better (apart from having to carry a spanner), we'll see.  May also try to source some toothed washers/wider washers.

OK, just curious. I got an old Kona frame off here, nice but I wonder how the dropouts will hold up when I eventually build it up.

^ Seem more sensibly-sized bolts than toytown M5 efforts on my P7 (known design flaw on the 08 model).  Make sure you get correct recommended torque, suck it and see as is.  If it slips then instead try replacing the allen bolts with hex-head bolts spannered.

The 2007 replacement dropouts solved any sliding issues and I think they retrofit earlier models so it might be worth keeping an eye out for any.

I have 1x9 on my (26er) Soul with a 30t up front and 11:32 cassette.  The chainring is an OnOne NW job, and the mech is non-clutch; this works fine and I haven't had any issues with dropped chains.

For me, where I ride, the gear ratio is a bit hard going, abeit not to the extent that I'd prioritise a new cassette over the existing (long) list of MTB Stuff To Buy.

In your place I'd try just building up with what you have, perhaps with a NW chainring, and see how you go on.
