E bike

10 speed

New chain and rear mech (Shimano)

Microshift cassette 10-42

Skips like a slipping freehub

Things tried:

Swapping mech and shifter from microshift to Shimano (same symptoms preceded this swap)

New chain (Shimano)

Hanger alignment

Another (new) wheel

Swapping the skipping cogs

Indexing

B tension gap is smallest it can be

What else can I do?????

I'd use a rope rather than a chain for skipping personally

Only joking :  )

New cassette?

Other than cassette...

Did you change the cable?

Is the chainring knackered?

I've chased cassette/freehub/chain/mech issues and found it to be the chainring...

What, you'd actually use a chain for skipping? Sounds a bit dangerous if you ask me.

Change the chainring. If you can turn the chainring over you can sometimes get more use out of it.

Skips like a slipping freehub

Does the freehub feel loose at all?  Can you pull it off to see if you have a broken pawl or two?

It's happened from New so it's not the chainring

Cable new also yes

Is it in the highest gears? I had an issue with chain-wrap once, too few teeth engaged by the chain. It was a while ago, but I think I solved it by shortening the chain a bit.

Is it skipping in on every cog or just some? Can you tell if the issue is at the cassette or chain ring end?

Also, what do you mean by skipping? I tend to think of skipping as the chain starting to lift as if it was starting to shift to another cog then dropping back and slipping when the chain slips from worn teeth but I'm probably wrong.

Just a thought, some 10 speed chains are now directional, what would happen if one went on backwards?

Hyperglide/Linkglide mismatch? I've no idea what happens if you mix them.

Something gone wonky & slipping in the motor?

Faulty chain? Stiff links maybe

If that's the case then it's 2 faulty chains

I had a problem cassette with a misaligned tooth. It caused problems just like you describe. Also, is the new cassette correctly assembled and fitted?

That's a good call, I'd skipped, (ha!) over the fact it was an e-bike.

was going to also say ebike cranks have a clutch between the crank and chainring?

Cable new also yes

Absolutely positive you've routed the cable the correct way around the lock nut on the mech?

Very easy on some to do it the way that looks obvious and that isn't right and causes the issues you describe.

I've done it. More than once 🙂

Ambrose yes

With the motor off (Shimano cargo) is better but not perfect

Wrong size Quick Link? (guess who learned this the hard way when fitting one of the road bike, then not riding the road bike for months by which time I forgot it was there..)

Narrow/wide teeth on jockey wheels lined up correctly? Chain length correct? Getting good tension from the rear mech?

Have you over-tightened the b screw and permanenty messed up derailleur alignment?

iirc pulley tooth to tooth on largest sprocket should be ~10mm.

Why not try putting the old cassette on to see if it's possible?

Possibly a non-catastrophic freehub issue?

Worn pawls combining with worn ratchet to make it slip every so often - possibly when/if the pawls stick down a little bit? Possibly exacerbated a bit by winter conditions and a bit of cold?

Given all the above, it's my best guess.

I've shattered two sets of Hope pawls in very cold (minus 4 and lower) probably through a combination of all of the above and some rogue water in the freehub.
