Mate at work has asked me to help him sell his old Stumpjumper. Anyone know what year it is? I'm (very much) guessing 97/98.

Earlier I'd say. 96 maybe. I had a 97 and the graphics were different (a style that continued into the early 2000s iirc).

later than 1996-I have a Stumpy FS 1996 and it had regular cantis on when it was new not Vee brakes. Still used as my SS commuter bike

Its the same year as mine, I reckon 96. doesn't the frame number (stamped to one of the dropouts) include the year of manufacture?

I had a 98 stumpy and there was a lot more oversizing going on, so pre 98 is all I can say
