Kid round the corner wants a bmx for his 7th birthday. His folks aren't loaded so have a max budget of £150. Unfortunately he knows his bikes and wants one with a 3 piece chaiset with the micro gearing like all the cool kidz have. Anyone seen any bargains? Thanks very much!

Mongoose program at £180 is best i can come up with:

(I assume he'll want 18" wheels or maybe even 16"?)

He's 7? He might want those things but will he be able to tell the difference?

Not in terms of performance but it's what he keeps banging on about apparently.

at 7 a 20 inch will be ridiculous for him. Needs an 16 or an 18 . Have a look on here.

Has that 'goose got micro gearing? I'm looking for one for my son, but the chainring looks pretty standard?

micro gearing standard is 25:9 and I guess 27:10. Most cheaper bmxs dont have micro gearing. The goose has a 33 t front ring so im guessing its 12 on the back.

The obsession with micro gearing is all fashion driven. Yes it does give more clearance if you drop into a vert at 90 degrees to it. And you do save a little weight. but seriously are your kids gonna even go anywhere near a vert ?

Ask matt hoffman if he needed micro gearing back 10 years back?

If you get them a bike with standard gearing it can be upgraded. but that involves a new wheel to as a 33 12 will most probably be running a freewheel and a 9t rear is sprocket /cassette type body .

Microdrive is more expensive, because you need a cassette hub to get down to small sprockets. That Mongoose i linked to has a 13tooth freewheel - that's as small as freewheels go.

Like burmaboy says, it's all fashion. Plus those tiny 11 and 12 tooth sprockets don't last very long.
