[Closed] Help! Commencal Meta 5.5 2009, bolt through/maxle drop outs?

Howdy, I am attempting to tackle some of the flex in the back end of my recently purchased Meta and have been told by a chap at cycle surgery I can get bolt through drop outs.

After looking on Chain Reaction I'm struggling to find which one I'm after. Bolt through/Maxle? 12mm seems to be the way forward but I'm a bit lost as to what the difference is between the two...

Also getting the right one for each side seems to be a bit confusing?!

These:

Or this:

Gah! I'm well and truly lost, If anyone could help out I'd be eternally grateful!

I think I have some lying around at home you can have if you want the Maxle version, you will need a suitable wheel though, with a 12mm/maxle axle.

What I did with mine was just get the modifications for my rear wheel (Hope Pro II) to make it bolt in, which stiffened it up and no need to change wheel.

"Bolt through/Maxle? 12mm seems to be the way forward but I'm a bit lost as to what the difference is between the two..."
Aren't they the same thing?
(Maxle being 12mm-135mm)

Then there is the Syntace 12mm-142mm bolt through axle (no idea if this even goes with a Commencal, probably not?)

"bolt in" or bolt up being something else (but uses normal QR dropouts)

'10mm thru' axle something else again (again uses normal QR dropouts)

At least this was the impression I was under ..

Oh and then theres nutted/threaded axle (like on really cheap bikes, and some others)

As far as I was aware, as James says, there are:

Bolt-In/Up : 10mm Bolts go from the outside of the dropout into threads in the hub. Uses normal QR dropouts, but allows you to get it much stiffer. Like this hub:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=17387

Bolt-thru: 10mm axle that goes all the way through, bolted on the outside. Also stiffer like bolt-in

Maxle: 12mm axle, stiffer but needs a maxle QR which don't come cheap

Real Cycles is a lot clearer than anywhere else I've looked - Thanks for the tip Steelsreal

That would be fantastic mattjng, I will be upgrading my wheel to take this into account. I have dropped you an email from your profile about the dropouts and have a box full of odd bike bits incase you want anything in return.....

If you want to go Maxle, you're going to need the two 12mm dropouts plus the 12mm Maxle assembly itself which isn't exactly being given away. I'm sure that Superstar or somesuch do their own 12mm axle which is interchangeable though.

You'll also need to endure that your existing hub can be adapted for 12mm or you'll need to budget for a new hub too.

[edit] as mattjng has suggested, a Hope 10mm boled hub might yield similar results for far less outlay.

I've also got a pair of the dropout pieces for bolt-through. I'm pretty sure they're 12mm, not 10mm.

Whether they make a huge amount of difference I don't know. There's a lot of flex in that back end.

Superficial - It's bonkers right!? My old hardtail didnt really have much flex so I was really surprised when I got the Meta. 12mm FTW I reckon!

Don't want to state the obvious but here goes anyway!! The only way I get the rear wheel tight on my Meta is to brace one side of the swing arm against my legs while pushing the other swing arm in towards it, then doing up the QR. Normally get another five to ten turns on the nut that way. I know that is probably telling you nothing you don't already know though ๐Ÿ˜€

Maxle - fancy 12mm bolt up thing - I've got one and it's expensive but very good.

10mm bolt - just that - a 10mm bolt. Commie did provide extra 10mm dropouts that are a 'hole' you can only use a 10mm bolt through

You can also use a 10mm bolt in normal QR drop outs too (? less stiff).

All the above need 'extra' parts/new hubs, as standard qr is 9mm.

Hope pro 2/3 will do all...

Double check which 12mm dropouts you get, 12mm thru are plain internally whereas 12mm Maxle are threaded (it may only be the non lever side).

Superstar do 10 and 12mm thru axles as well as a 10mm QR (for a thru axle hub).

I'd say either 10mm bolt in the existing dropouts or 12mm thru with the corresponding ones. As said go to Commencal owner's club!

Steve @ real cycles no longer stocks Commencal and only has very limited stocks left of drop outs he is going to be listing all his remaining stock on eBay next week
Do a search on the commencalownersclub.com website it's a question asked many times before
