Hi guys,
I'm pretty new here and I wanted to ask for a little bit of help with my first bike build.
My current bike (Carrera vengeance Ltd) has been chopped into a fast commuter, so I wanted something more fun for the weekends.

Due to financial constraints I want to build up an On One Summer Season in the cheapest possible way. With the maximum bang for my buck.
Im aiming to run it with only 8 gears.

I already have:
Wheels, brakes, forks, saddle, stem and bars.

Its just the drive train side of things im not confident with!
Rear wheel already had an 8 speed Shimano cassette.

Would you guys be able to advise me which bits to buy, I believe im going to need:

Headset (FSA Pig was first choice)

Bottom bracket
Single front chainring + cranks
Chainguide

Rear derailleur
Rear shifter
Chain

My lack of knowledge about the cranks / bottom bracket / chainring are my main worries.
Thanks for any help you can give!

Matt

If your buying new might as well buy 10spd. Crank includes a bottom bracket. 11-36 cassette will get you up anything, 32t front might see you spin out occasionally on the flat, sell the outer & inner rings off the crank & the front shifter. Check Chainreaction & others, might be able to buy a single shifter & save a few £'s. S/H might be an option for cranks/shifter & mech, but tbh, for what you'll save I'd go new at least on the cassette/chain & chainring. Deore middle ring is steel...tough as old boots & will outlast alloy 3x over. Oh, probably need shorter chainring bolts but only few £'s on EBay.

Got some spd's going spare - well used but bearings fine.

Yours for a fiver...

I'd try without a chain guide, if it keeps dropping you can always add one, but I've never found the need for one when running 1x8.

You won't find any 8 speed kit available any more, realistically. For another £30 for a cassette, it's worth going full 10 speed.

Just pick up bits on ebay and/or retrobike for the 8speed stuff.

My old Summer Season was built on a budget and for the money, a set of used Deore HT2 cranks, On-One SS singlespeed ring and a Superstar chainguide (the top only one - XCR or something) was faultless. Tried running it without a chain guide and it just didn't work (on the trails I ride).

Cheers for the advice guys,

Is there an easy way for me to check if my wheel will take a 10 speed cassette? Its currently got a 8 speed HG40cassette?
takisawa2 - thanks for all those links, I didn't realise that the cranks come with a bottom bracket.
I think that brand new stuff is cheap enough, unless I stumble upon a great second hand deal, so ill probably go with those choices of yours.

Jet26 - Cheers for the offer of the SPD'd I run a set on my commuter bike, but will probably just keep standard pedals for now.

Thanks for the help, ill keep you updated.

I may be wrong but a freehub is a standard size, so any standard MTB cassette should fit. They just make the sprockets thinner (hence why a 10/11 speed chain is much thinner than 9 speed or 8 speed), and less spacers.

faz083 is correct, 8/9/10 speed cassettes all fit on the same freehub body.
i would also echo the sentiment of 'might as well go 10 speed'.
