My mate just got the new 40/28 xtr 10spd transmission with the 36 cassette on the back, and this seems like a great combination. I would like to replicate this but with an ethirteen (TRS) dual chain guide and a bash ring for some singletrack alpine work. Spent hours trying to find a shimano based combination that works but reached a total dead end. The new XT 785 looks great - but bash not possible. Thought about getting the 785 rings and putting them on an old 770 set of cranks, but the tech spec says for the 785 cranks only. Otherwise getting a shiftable 40t 10spd ring almost impossible. Any tips? Maybe ditch the bash and risk the ring?

There was a thread a week or so back with a bashring on a new XT 2x10 chainset, think it might have been from Italy.

I spent a couple of hors mucking about with bash rings earlier in the week for a 22 36 and 24 38 combo. (both 2x9)
a 34T race face ring was more than big enough for the 36t and the Shimano 36 t bash would have worked with the 38t chainring if it had fit the cranks (shimano bashrings and chainrings it would seem are a tight fir on anyone else's cranks)

Its deffo a tricky one. I prefer to crank a higher gear than spin, hence the 40t - which I know isn't normal!

just use a triple on the front with a big outer ring and don't use it...
