Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of advice on helmets. Recently I managed to have my best crash ever which resulted in my helmet being retired and me suffering from quite bad concussion I am now looking for a new helmet. My giro Skyla, according to docs, saved my life so i'm thinking i'm going to get another one but i was just wondering if for more money you get better protection? For example if i'd have spent £90 on my helmet instead of £30 would i have escaped the hospital? I'm unsure of the differences between helmets really? Do they offer different levels of protection depending on the price?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Muddy Rose

More money usually buys more vents and lighter weight. And maybe a better finish.

Buy what fits, not whats cheap (unless the two go together!)

Thanks rockthreegozy! That's what I thought was the case however I was just checking. I suspect it'll be another Giro Skyla because it was really comfy and it's obviously done the trick! I was just checking to make sure that was the right thing to do and i wasn't compromising on safety! 🙂

£60 more seems a bit much for extra vents and a 'nicer' finish. In 20 years of riding, the whole one-helmet-being-nicer-than-another thing has never quite grabbed me.

Seriously, as long as they meets the same crush standards, and they are properly fitted, aren't they all the same?

There may be marginal differences between a cheap helmet and a expensive one - but only marginal. Look for the snell standard as well as CE marked - I think snell is a slightly higher standard ( but I wouldn't swear to it.

Teh only real way to get more protection is to go for a different style of helmet such as a pisspot - but that is debatable anyway.

So - the one that fits best and is made by a reputable manufacturer is as good as you will get
