Hi all, the nice round velcro spot stickers inside my Giro have fallen off at the brow pad. some diy type replacements i bought seem to refuse to stick to the material of the helmet interior. Madison have kindly sent me (for free) a strip of velcro patches but they dont stick either.

They literally slide off as if the helmet has years of sweat soaked into it...

so, anybody had this and found a solution? Giro dont sell replacements for the originals and im not keen on trying my usual cleaning medium of choice - Isopropyl alcohol on the helmet foam!

You sure it isn't time to replace the lid?

really? no way, its in good shape apart from that. I wont cave in to built in obsolescence unless i absolutely have to.

How old is the helmet?

try cleaning it first - but beware anything strong enough to remove all the sweat and grease will possibly damage the helmet.

built in obsolescence
It's not really built in obsolesence, they haven't made your helmet obsolete by not providing spares, it's just broken and in need of replacement.

Then again I've normaly crashed often enough to warrent a replacemnt long before I get to 3/4/5 years or whatever the recomendation is.

New helmets cheeper than a night in the pub and my head hurts a lot less after wearing a helmet.

id say they have made it obsolete, if i couldn't get my car fixed because a part - the simplest in the car - wasn't available, id be pretty cross. They obviously still have sticky pads in their manufacturing process, so why not make them available?

I've given it a few gentle cleans with a bit of washing up stuff, baby wipes (alcohol based) but the finish on the helmet just seems like teflon to any pads i can find off the shelf. I've emailed Ay-Up as they sell velcro dots which they say are super sticky but i expect that applies to helmet exteriors.

It's about 3 years old but as its a night riding helmet (got tired of fiddling with the Lumicycle helmet mount) it gets only a third of the total riding hours.

๐Ÿ™‚ i dont go to the pub any more, my head hurts too much afterwards ๐Ÿ™‚

They did supply the spare parts (for free). In your car example it's like saying "Ford offered me new piston rings for free, but it's done 200,000miles so the bores and pistons are so worn that they wont fit"

I used to get the same problem in one of my old helmets, but my XEN (rip) and current E2 don't have the problem, the velcro bits seem to be positioned in the cradle parts of the helmet so theres an air gap between the velcro and my head.

The convertape guy on eBay / t'interweb sells a whole load of different velcro options, may be of use?

cheers Drain.

Tinap - yep you're right i suppose if its body fluids that have stopped pads sticking, i was hoping that Giro had special glue on their specific pads. I'll try pads on a part which wouldnt have been affected by the sweat and drool.
