I need something that'll attach to my helmet / bike and is also cheap enough to be disposable. I'm not massively worried about quality, but it's got to be a step up from your common or garden mobile phone camera.

Can anyone give me any recommendations please?

You'll want something with a wide angle, 130°+, otherwise the camera will be filming quite far in-front. Save some money and go for a HD camera (GoPro, Contour, DriftHD).

Or... Go for a cheap 2nd hand GoPro SD from Fleabay.

Has anyone tried the Tachyon Micro HD cameras - at $139 they look like a steal? Are they any good compared to the Go-Pro or Contour?

I seem to remember Coastkid mentioning that he uses / used the original Tachyon XC for his videos.

I just sold one of my 2010 Tachyon XC cams for £40, maybe too cheap!,
I mostly use a Go Pro now but thinking of adding the Tachyon HD cam (£190) to the collection, i like how quick i can mount it for a spot of filming, dont know if the 2010 XC cameras (not HD) are still available but the quality is not too bad for the money, non HD is a lot quicker to upload ,edit and export on simpler editing software like movie maker etc, more ideal for blogging, quick posts on forums, FB groups etc..

Sometimes HD film take longer to edit than to do the filming!,

Quality costs, money and time! 🙂

The Contours are cheap most places so worth looking around.

Do they work properly with rechargeable batteries? Their website says lithium AAAs are recommended.

How cheap do you mean?
I've had one of these cheapo Muvi copies for about a year. Works OK but battery only lasts about an hour.
For the price it's been fantastic!

Thought about getting a Veho Muvi HD10+

Or would a Go Pro be much better. Any thoughts.

Tachyon cameras are best with Lithium batteries, they last a while so it isnt an expensive option, 2 batteries a month on average on a movie a weekend,

Thanks for the heads up on the micro cam price chugg08,
mine was the larger xc one, so i just ordered a micro one! 😀

Here is the quality, not bad for £80
