I thought I knew about headsets, turns out I do not.

I am about to recieve a frame that I believe has 1.5" straight headtube which is 125mm in height.

I already have a tapered fork with the correct travel with a steerer of 165mm and am beggining to wonder if the steerer is going to be long enough, I suspect probally not.

Before I head for the option of looking at new forks I suppose I should at least try to work out the stack height.

It looks as though if I go external cups I will not have enough clearance and am sat here looking at zero stack headsets with no real idea of what they require from the headtube.

Can they be used instead of external cups and can I press in a semi integrated headset at each end, just the bottom or not at all?

What am I not quite understanding about all of this?

I see it now, I need external cup at the bottom and semi integrated at the top. Time to look for the lowest stack combination of stem and headset

DMR Defy is low stack, 27mm apparently.

@phil5556 good shout, it is 27mm and the lowest headset I can find so far with that is the cane creek 70 slam that has a 2mm stack for the upper and the cane creek 40 EC44/40 with a stack of 12mm I can get the stack height to 41mm so I am potentially 1mm out.

Fork steerer length: 165mm
Headtube height: 125mm

Stem stack height: 27mm

Upper headset stack height: 2mm
Lower headset stack height: 12mm

I know from previous experiance that when assembling all of this you have to leave a 3mm gap between the top of the steerer and the stem cap so was wondering if this might just work

1.5 isn't always the same size.

What bike is it then we can figure if you can get a ZS bottom?

@squirrelking oh! the frame is a On One Huntsman though I can't find much in the way of info online for it.

Oaft, I'd be looking at wayback machine to see if they ever put specs up, that's a pain in the arse to be sure.

Even if you're stuck with an external bottom set 165mm is doable if the top one is zero stack. IIRC from my searching for the same sort of dimensions Spank Spikes were about the lowest stack for their time but are now firmly in second hand territory. DMR Defy is another good shout above.

I had a look and I'd agree it's an EC44/ZS44 bottom/top, as far as I can see the FSA Orbit ITA that the full bike is specced with only comes in that flavour.

No idea what the stack is but the top cap is a hefty 12.3mm so I'd definitely be looking for something shorter up top, the bottom may be much of a muchness so you may save money with just a top set.

Either that or get a new steerer pressed in.

The build was beggining to look like a bit of frankenstein when I was trying to work out a way to solve this, so I've just ordered a new fork which was always the long term plan anyway. Lets keep this between us for now.

Thanks for the help.

Haha, fair enough, that's the way it so often goes.

To avoid future confusion for people referring back to this post a 1.5 straight headtube is 49mm, not 44mm, unsure what straight 44mm is known by,ย  integral maybe, not to be confused with integrated which is bearings straight to frame with no cups.ย  ย Gotta love headset standards, NOT. 😀

unsure what straight 44mm is known by,

Semi-integrated, generally. Semi-integrated is the press-in cups where the bearings sits inside the 44mm ID HT to take a 1 1/8" steerer. Can use a 1 1/2 to 1 1/8" taper steerer if an external cup is fitted on the bottom.
