Fork Leg ?
Was riding some trails the other day and on a couple of corners weird things werer happening up front
Ok, so its a skinny 23mm , light 29er rim with a 2.4 Trail King ust tyre, 18 -19 psi.
Grip level was good but it felt like either the fork was getting squirely, the tyre was side shifting on the rim , or the wheel itself was deflecting
Im down to 75kg now so not overly heavy. I know race car engineers do use cameras to see whats going on suspension wise . No way could i look down at the wheel and study it, too fast and narrow . Doesnt really matter in the real world as I'm not a budding enduro wannabe.
More interested in the dynamics and not crashing , or having that feeling of about to crash . Having said that , the 2.4TK does appear to be a very catchable tyre. Lets go , but correct inputs keep you upright with a small shot of adrenaline for good measure
sorry for the clickbait title
Damned click bait
tyre pressure and squirming. add more psi to the tyre
check tyre pressures, check for loose spokes, check axle or q/r is tight, ride bike
I've run go-pros at work riding on the hub carrier of car suspension rigs battering down simulated pave / pothole tracks. They survived quite well, even with a permanent USB cable to power them (mostly on timelapse for a few days at a time). With the wide angle lens you need to position them quite close to your "thing" of intetest.
And I was considering using one yesterday on a stick with a torch in drain-cam mode....
I haven’t but I’d like to. And the rear to see just what flex goes on in the back end of my bike. I think I’d find it interesting or even surprising....maybe
Yes, of course.
<reads thread>
Actually no
Just stick on the bars looking down. Pretty amazing to see how much the fork goes through even in my riding.
Oh and 23mm rim with a 2.4 at 18psi? No blinking wonder it felt squirrely. Put a decent pressure in it.
The 2.4 trail king is a high volume tyre so it's actually quite tall. We used to run them on 5.1d rims and tricons which were 21mm inner and early spline1 wheels at 23mm..but these were the higher psi days where 30-40psi was normal.
If your "UST" tyre has tubeless printed on the side then this was a heavier casing.
It's often hard to find the pressure balance.. low is good for natural trails but when you roll into a machine built trail with berms you can easily start making that low pressure tyre squirm about in the corners without trying too hard.

This.
2.4 on 23mm rim is pushing things anyway, but then on top you're running very low pressure.
Do you not feel rocks/roots through the rim bottoming out on the floor?
No
Never noticed the rim being dinged by root hits. We dont have rocks in Hampshire.
I did ramp up the psi by a couple of psi for a few more runs down, but at the same place on thevsame corner there was a definate disconnect.
Going to try a wider profile rim i think
Maybe a 30mm id ust one but i would like to keep the weight down if possible
75kgs? - 22psi minimum on 2.4 tyre, skinny rims.
