What are people doing these days with regards to chainstay protection from chain slap on hardtails?

Is it still really needed with clutch mechs and 1x?

Not a problem I've come across on my Orange Five or Shand fitted with a Rohloff + Gates belt 😎

No you shouldn’t need it. I didn’t need any on my hardtail. . . until I had to singlespeed it home one day, then I really did 😕

Needed on mine & I used old inner tube wrapped around the chain stay.

Definitely! Singlespeed avoids it though…

Clutch mechs reduce the slap from the bottom(!)

But with so many chains not having a great lot of clearance above the stays in high gears it doesn't take much for contact to occur. Bit of 3m tape sorted mine out.

As above, yes. Plus all the times you forget to flick your clutch on after effing about with something.

2 or 3 layers of gorilla tape, cut to length and width, round off the ends, pull tight over bends of top of the chainstay, smooth down.

Looks neat and just about as classy as sticky tape on a frame can.

I'm still wrapping with old inner tubes. I guess that I'll run out one day!

Most of the moulded 3m sticky backed chainstay protectors for Vitus and nukeproofs are available cheap on CRC, pick the one that looks closest and trim to fit.

Self-amalgamating tape wrapped around an inner tube for me. Definitely needed and easy to fix when it does get scuffed.

Am I the only person who uses a short length of road bike bar tape? Lifeline stuff from CRC is cheap as chips and the sponginess deadens the sound of any slap. Lasts for ages and never gets tatty too. Plus a roll will do several bikes.

I know but if you cut the tube into a single layer thin strip it doesn't look anywhere near as bad, especially on black frames! I've actually had a few comments on how neat it is on one of my bikes. Managed it without any cable ties or tape to hold the ends down!

My Scout came with a velcro/neoprene sleeve. It looks nice but gets grit in at the edges so replaced for inner tube and leccy tape.
