Anyone ever experienced this - you get really excited waiting for your new (to you) bike part to turn up. When it does you open the box and discover its everything you wanted and in better condition than you were expecting.
Then you look at the box it came in and realize that the previous owner has just taken ownership of this years flagship model and is flogging is old stuff off....then your face drops a little and you wish you had listened a bit more intently at school so it could be you buying the new bling stuff instead of scouring the internet for a bargain.
Then finally you get a little irritated and wonder if the previous owner did this on purpose in order to show off his new toy - after all wouldn't you keep the box ideally in case you had a warranty issue...?
tw*t
no.
edit: I'm quite happy for someone else to take the depreciation hit.
Marx called this feeling commodity fetishism.
If I want to sell an old bike I'll often pop down to the LBS and ask them for a bike box in which to ship it. I'll have to remember to ask for one from a fancy bike next time ๐
Try thinking about all the people worse off than you. There are far more of them, and it may help you to put your life in perspective...
it all just ends up as swarf and oxides.
No, I get buyers remorse though.
Last new bike I bought was in 2011, it was very clean, very new and all very fancy - I would be the envy of my friends (well for about a month before the next latest thing arrived) but I bought it on finance and 3 years suddenly seemed like a long time and was it really worth all that?
It didn't help that in retrospect it wasn't a great bike (despite almost perfect reviews) and it really didn't help when it got stolen a year later.
Many sacrifices were made to get another, slightly older, slightly lower spec version second-hand (although it actually rode better).
I think I'll struggle to buy another new, new bike - I really like my current one, it's a collection of upgrade bits from the last one, plus a few new bits built around a second-hand frame, the frame has got a small dent and has been the victim of a frankly terrible respray - I keep threatening to have it redone at Argos, but I'm not sure I can lose it for 2-3 weeks for the sake of paint.
The only fly in the ointment I keep hearing this voice whispering to me "it's obsolete, 26" wheels are old fashioned", but thankfully my wife's voice is much, much louder.
Then finally you get a little irritated and wonder if the previous owner did this on purpose in order to show off his new toy - after all wouldn't you keep the box ideally in case you had a warranty issue...?
This sounds like insecurity/paranoia/projecting your thoughts to me. FWIW, I often send things off in the packaging for the (new) replacement part - Even if it is a new part, I don't have to keep the packaging for a warranty - only if I want to send it back because I've changed my mind.
I should point out this was only a semi-serious, tongue-in-cheak post.... and I deliberately missed out the "lets rationalize this" stage that occurs shortly after the emotional "new toy arrived" phase has expired.
+1 jam bo, secondhand is secondhand.....
