My mate was talking to a guy down the road last week. Got two bikes for his kids despite my mate advising him to got to the LBS. - They were adult bikes i.e. to "grow into".
He picked them up - Cassettes were rusty and the chain was dry, Indexing also was not setup - Just confirms that our, like amny othe local Halfrauds are shocking but people who don't know about bikes still use them as teh first port of call! I dispair!
My lbs tried convincing me a that Giant mtb which the Mrs sat on and couldn't touch the ground with the saddle lowered completley was the "right" bike for her.
My local Halfords talked me out of buying rim tape from them and to order some Velox of the net instead
So they're not all bad, and many lbs are not all that good either.

I agree enfht but I guess its like buying a car - you get some good dealer and some shocking ones ๐

I agree some are shocking but other are really good. I know (one of my mates works for the company doing it) they are spending a load of money on training in attempt to get them all up to a higher standard.
My local halfords is superb, the store manager is ex trails champ danny holroyd & the team he has there are great, the choice of bikes is pretty good too allthough the spares 7 accersories are poor.
