so my last 2 chains have gone onto my love hate with ebb just fine, ordered a new chain the other day and went to fit it, with the ebb at its shortest angle the chain is just too tight to get the power link on but with the next one put back on its to long for the ebb to take up the slack...i though ebb's negated the need for half links and why has this never happened before?
answers and abuse welcomed

EBBs can have varying amounts of adjustment. A "1/2 link EBB" is smaller than a normal one and will work with some magic ratios, but others might need a 1/2 link.

If everything else is the same as before, I'd make sure you're not being an idiot: check the wheel is straight in the dropouts, make sure the spacing on the rear cog is the same as before and the chainring is in the same place.

Definitely try to avoid 1/2 links, they're a pain in the bum.

yup all as before and no changes which is why its wierd that it should happen now after all this time..
its a phil wood EBB and seems to have a mahoosive amount of variance in taking up the slack but unfortunately my chain seems to sit right inbetween where it wants/needs to be!!

seems really bizarre. Can you fit the chain with the wheel not in the dropouts then get the wheel into the dropoouts?

bizarre indeed tj..ive never come across this before ever, if i do as you suggest then its just fractionally too tight on the freehub bearing and you can feel it grinding slightly...and as i said with the extra link/s needed to fit another powerlink its too long..

Won't the new chain stretch a bit as soon as you start riding it? I find I have to adjust the ebb to change the tension in anew chain fairly quickly after first fitting. (Might shag your freehub bearings if it is toooooo tight initially though)

Have you put the chain on inside out?

Edit: Joking aside - is it the same size chain ie. not a 8/9/10 speed which isn't sitting on the sprockets properly.

clobber too tight for that sadly!
woody i had thought of that as intially i thought i'd put it on back to front but sadly that didn't work either.
its a SS specific chain. 1/8

Is that what you had on before and are the sprockets for 1/8" too?

Have you got the old chain still, and can you lay it next to the new one to make sure you've got the same number of links? Even before it wore and stretched, the old chain would have fitted.

Check for excessive chainring and sprocket wear.

Do you run your EBB with the BB at the bottom or the top?

The Love/Hate has a full sized Phil Wood EBB, so it's not a half link EBB.

You should not be in the situation you're describing, so I'd check everything carefully as suggested above. HTH
