Am I just unlucky or are they rubbish?

Mine is starting to get really "notchy" on the 29er after quite limited use. Local bike mech has done his best to adjust it but reckons it needs replacing.

I really like the crankset but am wondering whether it's worth replacing the BB if the same thing is going to happen again given I've got a set of old XT square taper cranks and brand new BB I could stick on instead, especially as a similar square taper setup on the singlespeed (which gets ridden far more) has been running smooth as for donkey's years.

They are a bit rubbish, haven't tried any of the (not so) new "Team" variety, but you can extend the life of them by popping off the seals and packing the bearings with grease - there's a surprisingly small amount in there. Managed to get over a year by doing this on my CX'er.

Another alternative is using the Hope GXP adaptors and a Hope BB.

I got so fed up with replacing mine (4 in a year = £100) that I bought a hollotec slx crankset complete with shimano BB for £100 and it's still running smooth a year later.

Just fitted a red ceramic one to my Cervelo I hope it lasts a bit longer.

On the plus side it was easy to fit, plastered a fair bit of grease around it.

My first one lasted about 4 months. Not only that, I just did not get on with them when taking cranks off and putting them back on. Needlessly fussy.
When I built up my new frame I made a point of going for Shimano. Much easier.

Fussy, seemed very easy to me, but they deffo don't seem to keep the dirt out compared to others.
