I'm looking at picking up a bike I can commute on and use on the trails too, I have found some good deals like the genesis core bikes but the models I can afford are badly specced.

The GT Avalanche 1.0 would be in budget and has a good spec but I don't know what the quality is like these days?

Any thoughts or opinions on GT?

I've had 2 , a 2010 Avalanche 1 and a 2011 Force 1, both where quality bikes with a higher spec than others in the price bracket. If buying new look at Paul's cycles as they normally have a few last years models at bargain prices

i had a gt sensor 4.0, shit spec but the frame built qualitly seemed to be good. but never felt confident enough on it to put it thru its paces. i am sure you could get something better for your money. imo second hand is always better you just have to make sure your buying something that has been looked after. my advice is watch and wait untill the right second hand bike comes up at the right price

Yeah it's on Paul's cycles at a great price. The genesis cores are great prices but the forks are not the best.

I need a bike in the next two weeks so waiting isn't really an option.

Hi mate, I bought a gt avelanche expert from Pauls about 4 months ago, great bike but the tora fork was terrible. Just stuck a marzochi marathon on it and transformed the bike, great spec for the price though, and a similar 2012 bike would have been closer to 800 quid.

What size did you get mate? Does the small come with a curved top tube?

I bought the medium, which fits perfect for me.(5'10, 32 leg). Swapped the bar for an answer pro taper, 70mm stem. The fork had a loose feel, even when locked out, and was struggling to get anywhere near all it's travel. The drivetrain, wheels, frame even saddle are in my opinion great. putting some 2009 xt brakes on, but not had any issues with the avids.

I don't know wether to get the 2010 or 11 model and save some money.

I like the white and silver of the 2010 but the brakes are not as good as the 11.
